Belvedere 21

The Belvedere 21 museum is not only architecturally fascinating, but it is also heavily invested in Austrian art from the twentieth and twenty-first century.

The spectacular structure was built as the Austria pavilion for the World Exhibition in 1958 by famous architect Karl Schwanzer and opened as a museum for twentieth-century art in Vienna in 1962. Since 2011, Belvedere 21, as the property is now known, has hosted Austrian contemporary art as well as temporary foreign exhibits. Adolf Krischanitz, an architect, renovated and refurbished Schwanzer’s building for its re-opening in 2011. Schwanzer was awarded the Grand Prix d’Architecture in 1958 for his avant-garde and technically inventive design.

The Belvedere has three venues, with the Belvedere 21 serving as a showcase for contemporary Austrian and international art. Visitors are given an overview of Austrian art made in the last 70 years, as well as major worldwide positions, in the light-drenched, open spaces of the modern museum architecture. The museum hosts performance installations, film screenings, specialty lectures, readings, concerts, and artist talks, and it serves as a platform for the local art scene. Following your visit to the museum, Lucy Bar in Belvedere 21 invites you in for some gastronomic treats.
