Battlogg Monument

Johann Josef Batlogg, a Montafon native, served as Landammann, judge, and national defender from 1751 until 1800.Military battles emanating from the French Revolution had a profound influence on Vorarlberg beginning in 1794.Batlogg successfully defended Vorarlberg and the Montafon area against French soldiers approaching from Switzerland in 1799.The monument was built in the winter of 1907 out of natural stones and a Carrara marble relief, according to a design by artist Jakob Bertleset.In Schruns, the Batloggstraße and Batlogghalle, today known as “Kulturbühne,” are named for the freedom warrior.During the Second World War, the Nazi authority used the memorial to remember the Schruns victims by placing crosses in front of it.
