Barankapark Hellerwiese

Because of the big Heller chocolate factory located to the south of the meadow, this open space was once known as Hellerwiese.Except for this manufacturing structure, the Belgrade Square remained undeveloped, and the meadow was utilized as a gathering point for traveling Lovara, Roma, and Sinti to continue their trade links (horses) to the Graz region. They were transferred from here to detention camps in 1941.The park was renamed Barankapark in 2003 after a Lovara who was originally known as a natural healer, and a chestnut tree and memorial stone were planted in the park’s south-west corner. There is a pavilion with rest spaces, and youngsters are served by the center grass, the football cage to the north, and the children’s playground to the east.

Six commemoration stones were erected in Barankapark in May 2014 to remember the many members of Roma households who were detained, deported, and killed by the Nazi dictatorship.
