The Arne-Karlsson-Park is one of the largest parks in Vienna’s 9th district, Alsergrund, with an area of around 12,500 m2.It is situated at the crossroads of Spitalgasse and Währinger Straße.
The green space was called Bürgerpark in 1932, then Guido-Holzknecht-Park after the radiologist and university professor Guido Holzknecht, whose bust is in the park.The facility was named after the Swedish engineer Arne Karlsson (1912-1947) on July 10, 1947.He had worked for the Swedish humanitarian group Rädda Barnen, which supplied food to the starving people of Vienna.On June 11, 1947, Arne Karlsson was shot dead by a Russian military post while on a business trip.For decades, the park has been distinct from the person Arne Carlsson Parkwritten, but in 2018, the adjacent Volksoper hosted a concert in the park written with C to commemorate its 120th anniversary.
Sights in the Park
- A replica of the bronze bust of the radiologist Guido Holzknecht , who had been created by Josef Heu and was unveiled by Mayor Karl Seitz in the new Bürgerpark on November 6, 1932
- A wall fountain on the wall of the air raid shelter, made by Mario Petrucci in 1953
- Elsa Brändström memorial by artists Hans Jaksch and Robert Ullmann , unveiled in 1965
- Since 2005 the permanent exhibition “Through the Darkness and Back Again” has been located in the air-raid shelter known as the memorial bunker.
