AQUA DOME – Tirol Therme Längenfeld

The Aqua Dome is a thermal bath in Längenfeld, Tyrol, Austria, with an associated spa hotel.Every year, around 350,000 visitors are counted.

The outer facade of the Thermendom is formed like a glass crystal, reflecting the surrounding mountains. The open-air thermal spa has three circular shell pools with diameters ranging from 12 to 16 meters. These are reached through a lighted and heated glass cone.Except for the brine bowl, active pool, and children’s pool, all pools have 10% thermal water added to the water. The thermal water is created by filtering glacial water via rock layers. At a depth of 1,865 meters and a temperature of 40 degrees, it streams into the hot pools. The Aqua Dome has a total surface area of 2,200 square meters of water. The entire thermal baths and wellness hotel complex is mainly based on Feng Shui. The architect was Wolfgang Vanek of Holzbauer & Partner.Hotel guests may also take advantage of the hotel’s own SPA, SPA 3000, which spans two floors and covers an area of 2,000 m2.To the north is the children’s portion, which contains an enclosed slide and a funnel slide. This construction is fashioned after a ship.

Around 1830, the thermal spring was first scientifically investigated. The original text said that “water impregnated with sulphurous hydrogen gas” was “probably the purest of the sources known to date.”A wooden bath complex with a bath house and a few rooms was built close to a modest church near the source. The 12-degree warm water was heated further in a furnace before being supplied to the baths in buckets. On November 5, 1875, this spa burned down.

In the years afterwards, the spring has changed hands several times.Längenfeld, a spa town, was founded by tourism pioneers in 1893.Wilhelm Walter, a Berlin architect, created the structure in the then-popular historicist style.A spa hotel has evolved through time, offering tourists therapeutic baths, cold water treatments based on Sebastian Kneipp and Vincenz Prießnitz, and milk remedies.Due to a drainage project in the 1960s, the spring dried up.After the spa hotel was closed and demolished in 1980, the name Bad Längenfeld was eliminated.

In 1986, it was agreed to reopen the source. The early test drillings did not produce the desired results.Only after a 1,865-meter-deep drilling in 1997 was 68-degree hot water obtained for economic use.First, the curative water, sodium-chloride-sulfate-sulfur thermal baths, were used in a natural pool with two smaller pools on the periphery. This natural pool may still be seen from the Aqua Dome as a historical memory.Currently, 90% of the spring water is fed to the thermal baths and blended with practically all of the pools.

The Aqua Dome and hotel were renovated in 2004, the hotel was expanded in 2012, and the Alpen Arche Noah children’s section was added in 2017.

As a leisure activity for the Tyrolean tourism industry, the facility, which employs around 220 people, is of national economic importance. The thermal baths are managed by Vamed AG on behalf of a consortium of proprietors. The Aqua Dome is a significant employer in the Tyrol Oberland.
