Alois Drasche Park

The Alois-Drasche-Park, located in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden, spans across 1.6 hectares and is a car-free park situated near the Wiedner Belt. The park is named after Alois Drasche, a cloth manufacturer and benefactor of Wieden who passed away in 1892.The park is adorned with high-end apartment complexes that exhibit late historicist and secessionist architectural styles. These structures have been evaluated by Felix Czeike and Friedrich Achleitner, who have noted their distinct architectural attributes.

The area surrounding the park, formerly known as Blecherne Turm field, was subdivided in the early 1900s.The Alois-Drasche-Platz was designated with an official name in 1898, and subsequently renamed to Park in 1899.The municipal authorities have made a distinctive decision for Vienna by opting not to allocate any lanes between the upcoming buildings and the park’s green area. Additionally, they have decided to discontinue the crossing streets at the park to ensure that the park remains entirely free of traffic. These residential properties are situated adjacent to the rear of the park and can be accessed through alternate alleys.

The houses adjacent to the main addresses were assigned the ident addresses Alois-Drasche-Park 1 to 18. The numerical sequence initiates from the northernmost point at the intersection of Seisgasse and follows the customary clockwise direction observed in Vienna’s squares. The southwestern perimeter of the park, specifically Blechturmgasse, serves as the demarcation line between the 4th and 5th districts. The closest public transportation options are the Blechturmgasse underground station for tram line 18 and the Rainergasse stop for bus line 13A.

The architects of note who operated in this location were Otto Wagner Jr. and Carl Holzmann.Wagner Jr. was responsible for the architectural designs of houses No. 8 (located at Schelleingasse 46 and constructed in 1902) and No. 9 (located at Radeckgasse 1 and constructed in 1902), as well as the adjacent properties situated at Johann-Strauß-Gasse 42 (constructed in 1904) and Schelleingasse 44 (constructed in 1904).Holzmann was the architect responsible for the design of houses No. 6 and No. 7, located at Johann-Strauß-Gasse 36 and 38, respectively.

The residential blocks that are in close proximity to the park are integrated with a select number of other houses situated in Blechturmgasse, Johann-Strauß-Gasse, and Schönburggasse, thereby establishing the Draschepark structural protection zone as designated by the City of Vienna.

It is important to note that the tranquil park located in the Wilhelminian district of the city is distinct from the Draschepark situated in Vienna-Liesing, which is a peripheral green space impacted by a city motorway at the Inzersdorf junction.
