Aigner Park

Aigner Park is located in the south of Salzburg at the foot of the Gaisberg, a favorite recreation place among residents. This park, with its historic structures, has been a protected natural area since 1980.

Aigner Park, located to the east of Schloss Aigen, has been in existence since 1780. The park was popular with nobles in its early years as a sort of open-air museum. Artists were initially drawn to its meandering pathways, beautiful locations, and ravines. Many artists and writers considered the journey from Aigner Park up the Gaisberg as a form of pilgrimage, making it the focus of their works in many cases.

The park, with its paths, vantage spots, grottos, and waterfalls, is one of the most significant early-nineteenth-century monuments of landscape gardening. Aigner Park is currently a protected natural area in recognition of its artistic importance. Among the highlights are:

  • the Classicistic stone-block sluice bridge from 1800 (the last of its kind in Salzburg province)
  • the “Pulpit”, a lookout platform with view of the breathtaking Alpine panorama
  • a healing spring, site of the former Bitterquelle

Both the No. 7 trolley bus and the S3 suburban rail take outdoor enthusiasts to the edge of this leisure area in minutes. The Schwarzenbergpromenade goes directly behind Schloss Aigen to the banks of the Felberbach, which feeds into the park. The main trail leads to the vantage point, while a side path extends along the forest’s edge to the south-east. Visitors may follow in the historic footsteps of this wonderful historic neighborhood thanks to numerous information boards.
