Adolf-Rhomberg-Haus

The Adolf-Rhomberg-Haus is located on Marktstraße, just across from the Capuchin monastery, in the Markt neighborhood. This facility is named after a noteworthy former inhabitant, Adolf Rhomberg, who was Vorarlberg’s governor.

The structure was built between 1798 and 1799 and was commissioned by Marx Alois Luger.Nonetheless, its current look is the result of a remodeling completed in 1900 by the renowned Art Nouveau architect Hanns Kornberger.

The spectacular mansion on the present Marktstraße was built by Marx Alois Luger, a textile merchant from Dornbirn.By the end of the 18th century, Luger had gained considerable money by taking over the commercial activities of his father’s business. In 1798, the individual in issue commissioned master builder Sigmund Hilbe to erect a garden castle in the Vorderstadt neighborhood. The project cost around 15,000 guilders, which is 10 times the cost of a conventional home construction. There were few large structures in the neighborhood of the present-day outer Marktstraße at the time. As a result, the palace was built in a rural environment, but on a major route.

When it was completed in 1799, the structure had a basement level and three further storeys above it. A hallway linked the front of each home to its mirrored image in the center of each story. The structure also had a large hall for special occasions, as well as an attic in the quadrilateral mansard roof that functioned as housing for the household staff.
