Pöstlingberg has a long and fascinating past dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally known as “Pöslinberch” or “Pöslin Family Hill”, the hill was described in a document dated 1146. The Pöslins were local aristocrats with castles and estates. Furthermore, the hill has witnessed several sieges and conflicts, notably during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of the Austrian Succession. Initially fortified in 1742, the hill has walls and bastions that are still visible. Once a chapel honoring the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built in 1748, pilgrims began to frequent the hill.
