Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen - Linz, Austria Travel Guide

Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen is one of the sixteen statistical districts of Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. In 2014 it was formed from the former districts of Kleinmünchen, Scharlinz and Schörgenhub. Its population in January 2021 was 22,723 inhabitants; its total area is 6,451 square kilometers.

Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen has a rich and varied history since Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen was a member of the Roman colony of Lentia. It was a separate municipality before the absorption of Linz in 1923. Including many mills and factories, it was a major center of the textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. Several historic buildings from this era are preserved and now used as community and cultural centers, including the Baumwollspinnerei Rädler, the Grillmayr Schlößl and the Löwenfeld Palace.

The district also includes the remarkable neo-Gothic church built in 1905-1906, the Pfarrkirche Kleinmünchen. Among the district’s annual cultural and social events are the Kleinmünchner Kirtag, a traditional fair with music, food and games, and the Auwieser Adventmarkt, a Christmas market featuring regional crafts and cuisine.

Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen is a dynamic and varied district combining residential, commercial and industrial areas. Linz Textil, one of Europe’s leading textile manufacturers, is well visible in the region. Another highlight of the area is the large shopping center offering a variety of stores, services and entertainment choices, known as the Infra Center.

Roads and public transportation allow the neighborhood to be easily connected to the rest of the city and its surrounding areas. Wiener Straße, the district’s main thoroughfare, connects it to the Mühlkreis highway as well as the city center. With Kleinmünchen station connected to the Westbahn, the district has several bus and tram lines.

Kleinmünchen-Auwiesen is full of outdoor and leisure activities. In the district is the 1.5 square kilometer Wasserwald, a large park used for recreation and water protection. In addition to large areas of forest and meadows, the park has playgrounds, a pond and sports facilities.

Bordered by the River Traun, which provides a lovely natural setting for fishing, walking and cycling, the area has numerous cycle paths and trails connecting the area with surrounding neighborhoods and the countryside.
