Industriegebiet-Hafen

Industriegebiet-Hafen - Linz, Austria Travel Guide

Industriegebiet-Hafen is one of the districts of the city of Linz, capital of Upper Austria. Besides the port of Linz, a major center of trade and transport on the Danube, it is the site of many industrial and commercial enterprises, as its name suggests.

The statistical district of Saint-Pierre merged with the former Hafenviertel in 2014 to create Industriegebiet-Hafen. The name reflects the two main characteristics of the district: the industrial zone and the port. From 1938, the Nazi government intended to make Linz a hub for armaments and heavy industry outside the port. The reconstruction and expansion of the port followed the Second World War and ultimately became very important for Linz’s economic recovery. Growing and attracting many companies, particularly in the chemical sector, the industrial zone surrounding the port has attracted new projects aimed at modernizing infrastructure, broadening the economic base and adding more green and cultural spaces to evolve the neighborhood.

Comprising an area of 9.5 square kilometers and approximately 2,500 inhabitants, Industriegebiet-Hafen is bordered to the south by the Traun River; to the east, the Danube; to the west, the railway tracks. It is located east of the city center. The tank port is in the middle; the commercial port extends towards the north of the district. Among the different types of cargo handled by the commercial port are bulk cargo, project cargo and containers. Its aquatic area is 23.6 hectares while its land area is 90,000 square meters. It has a railway terminal, several storage facilities and a container terminal. Liquid goods, including chemicals, gas and oil, are mainly stored and transported in the storage port. Its body of water extends over 21.7 hectares while its reservoir capacity is 330,000 cubic meters.

Apart from this, the district is home to several industrial and commercial buildings. Among the many chemical companies located in the one-square-kilometer Chemiepark Linz are Borealis, Chemson and Nufarm. Several other notable companies in the area include Plasser & Theurer, Voestalpine, and the Austrian Shipyard. The latter also runs the Voestalpine Stahlwelt, a museum and events venue showcasing the technology and history of steel production.

Besides work, Industriegebiet-Hafen is a center for leisure and culture. The neighborhood offers several attractions to both visitors and residents:

  • Showcasing local and international events, The Posthof theatre, dance and modern music venue hosts
  • Originally a military fortification, Winter Harbor today is a popular site for fishing, boating and picnicking.
The Neuland Project, an urban development initiative, aims to rebuild new parks, public spaces and new buildings by restoring the former Port Basin 2 and its surroundings.
  • Many shops, cafes and restaurants have made their home on Hafenstraße, which connects the city center and the port.
