Froschberg
The name Froschberg, meaning “frog mountain”, derives from the numerous ponds and marshes that once existed in the area. It was first mentioned when Froschberg joined the parish of St. Margarethen in 1288. The numerous wine cellars still in use today bear witness to Froschberg’s central role in wine trade and production in the 15th and 16th centuries. . Some of these caves were air raid shelters and concentration camps during World War II.
In 1938, the city of Linz united Froschberg and neighboring municipalities. The former districts Freinberg, Römerberg-Margarethen and part of the Volksgartenviertel merged with Froschberg in 2014 to create the new large district and new section of the city.
Froschberg offers a wide range of facilities and attractions to residents as well as guests. Among the most prominent are:
- More than 10,000 unique plant species from around the world inhabit the 4.2 hectare Linz Botanical Garden.
- Built in homage to the German student movement in 1889, the Burschenschafterturm, 33 meters high, offers a broad perspective on the city.
- Built on the basis of a former pilgrimage chapel, the baroque Kalvarienbergkirche houses a famous collection of crucifixions by Johann Baptist Straub.
- Made up of a Romanesque construction from the 12th century, the Martinskirche is the oldest church in Linz.
- Built as a Renaissance castle in the 16th century, the Jägermayrhof functions as a cultural and educational center.
- Built in 1952 as a multi-purpose venue, the Linzer Stadion can accommodate 21,005 people. In addition to being the home ground of the LASK Linz football team, it hosts, among other events, concerts.
- Established in 1971, the Private Pedagogical University of the Diocese of Linz offers research in several fields as well as teacher training.
The community of Froschberg combines rural and metropolitan life. Having a population of almost 11,700 inhabitants, it covers 4.53 square kilometers. It provides excellent access to the city’s other mobility choices by bus and tram. Besides an extensive network of retail stores, hospitals, restaurants and schools it also boasts.
