Tourism
Lienz is a popular travel location, especially for summer hiking and winter sports. Lienz features a range of attractions, including the Lienz Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed mountain range of the Dolomites, the ski resorts of Zettersfeld and Hochstein, the Tristacher See, a natural lake used for swimming and fishing, and Bruck Castle, a medieval fortification housing the East Tyrolean Regional Museum. Among other events and celebrations, Lienz organizes the Dolomitenmann, an annual extreme sports event, the Olala, an international street theater festival, and the Christmas Market, a festive market set up in the central square. Lienz recorded 1,017,000 overnight stays in 2019, of which 57% were domestic visitors and 43% foreign visitors, mainly from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Manufacturing
For metal products, machinery, electrical equipment and wood products in particular, Lienz is a manufacturing hub. Among the various industrial parks in Lienz – Peggetz, Nußdorf-Debant and Lienz-Süd – many small and medium-sized businesses find their place. Major companies in Lienz include Durst Phototechnik, producer of digital printing systems, Liebherr-Hausgeräte Lienz, manufacturer of refrigerators and freezers, and Durmont, producer of metal components and assemblies. Lienz also has a history of work in the fields of glassblowing, pottery and carpentry.
Agriculture
Surrounded by a rich and varied agricultural scene, Lienz sees crops growing including grains, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and herbs. Lienz also has a strong cattle, sheep, goat, pig and poultry industry. In addition to its meat products, notably speck, a type of raw and smoked ham, Lienz is renowned for its high-quality dairy products, including cheese, butter and yogurt. Lienz is also home to a wine growing area where red and white wines are made. Lienz has a farmers’ market where neighboring producers market their products directly to consumers. Lienz is also home to organic farms using environmentally friendly methods.

The regional center for services including commerce, transport, education, healthcare and public administration is Lienz. Lienz has markets, cafes, bars, shops and restaurants where guests can enjoy regional specialties as well as cuisine from around the world. Lienz is connected to other cities in Tyrol, Austria and surrounding countries by means of a railway station, a bus station and a small airport. Among the various educational institutions that Lienz boasts of are the Lienz High School, the Lienz Vocational School and the Lienz College of Education. Lienz offers residents of Lienz and neighboring regions healthcare services from its hospital, health center and various medical practices. The Lienz District Administration, responsible for several government services and operations, is headquartered in Lienz.
