Laa der Thaya had 6,246 inhabitants in January 2021.The population peaked in 1939 with 7,993; since then it has been declining but has recently stabilised.In 2018 94.1% were Austrian nationals; 0.8% were immigrants from the previous (pre-2004) EU member states and 2.7% from the new EU member states.1.5% were from the former Yugoslavia (excluding Slovenia and Croatia) or Turkey and 0.9% from other countries.In 2001 89% were Roman Catholic, 2.5% Lutheran, 1.8% Muslim and 5.3% non denominal. At the same time there were 4 Hungarians; the largest ethnic groups were Germans (96.1%) and Czechs and Croats (1% each).

The town has an area of 72.91 km2 and is divided into five cadastral communities: Hanfthal, Kottingneusiedl, Pernhofen, Ungerndorf and Wulzeshofen.
