Districts & Neighborhoods in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee
The capital and largest city of the Austrian state of Carinthia and historic Carinthia, which includes Slovenian Carinthia, is Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. The town with around 100,000 inhabitants is located on the banks of the river Glan and Lake Wörthersee. Although Klagenfurt is the administrative seat of the district of Klagenfurt-Land and a statutory city in Carinthia, it is a separate district of Klagenfurt-Land. Klagenfurt consists of sixteen districts, each with unique characteristics, history and culture.
I–IV. Innere Stadt
Consisting of four districts – I. Inner City, II. Völkermarkter Vorstadt, III. Villacher Vorstadt and IV St. Veiter Vorstadt – the historical and cultural center of Klagenfurt is the city center. There are many sights in the city center, including Klagenfurt Cathedral, Country House, Lindwurm Fountain, City Theater and the Old Castle. Among the many events held in the city center are the Christmas market, Ironman Austria and the Altstadtzauber festival.
V. St. Veiter Vorstadt
The district of St. Veiter Vorstadt, named after the neighboring town of St. Veit an der Glan, is located south of the city center. Although it includes smaller industrial and commercial areas, the neighborhood is primarily residential. There are many green spaces in the area, including the Kreuzberglpark, the botanical garden and the Europapark. In addition to some educational and cultural sites such as the Robert Musil Literature Museum and the Carinthian National Museum, the district is home to the private Gustav Mahler University of Music.
VI. Völkermarkter Vorstadt
The Völkermarkter Vorstadt is named after the neighboring town of Völkermarkt and is a district east of the city center. The neighborhood has a significant Slovenian minority and combines economic, industrial and residential sectors. The neighborhood’s sports facilities are well known; Examples include the ice rink, the Klagenfurt sports park and the Wörthersee stadium. The region also offers some religious and historical sites such as the Church of Peace, the Church of Saint-Egid and the Church of Saint-Georges.
VII. Viktringer Vorstadt
The Viktringer Vorstadt is named after the adjacent settlement of Viktring and is a district southeast of the city center. Although there are also some agricultural and recreational areas, the neighborhood is primarily residential. The natural beauties of the region are well known; Examples of this are the Rauschelesee, the Sattnitzberge and the Lendkanal. The district also offers various historical and cultural sites such as Ehrental Castle, Villa Samek and Viktring Abbey.
VIII. Villacher Vorstadt
The Villacher Vorstadt, named after the neighboring town of Villach, is a district west of the city center. The neighborhood has a significant Italian minority and combines residential, industrial and commercial areas. Well-known transport hubs in the district include the Southern Autobahn, Klagenfurt Airport and Klagenfurt Central Station. The district also has a few social and educational institutions such as Caritas, the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences and the University of Klagenfurt.
IX. Annabichl
One of the oldest areas of Klagenfurt, the Annabichl district is situated north of the Innere Stadt Though it includes minor industrial and commercial zones, the district is essentially residential. Historical and religious sites include the Annabichl Castle, the St. Anna Church, the St. Florian Church, and the St. Hemma Church abound in the area. The Strandbad Klagenfurt, the Minimundus, and the Planetarium are among the district’s several leisure and recreational venues as well.
X. St. Peter
One of the newest sections of Klagenfurt, the St. Peter area lies northeast of the Innere Stadt. Though it includes minor industrial and commercial zones, the district is essentially residential. Modern and inventive architecture from the district is well-known; examples include the Wörthersee Center, the Hypo Group Arena, and the Lakeside Science & Technology Park. The Carinthian Music Academy, the Carinthian Conservatory, and the Klagenfurt International School are among the district’s cultural and educational venues as well.
XI. St. Ruprecht
St. Ruprecht is a district west of the Innere Stadt. It bears the name of the 14th century St. Ruprecht Church, which was erected Comprising many fields, meadows, and orchards, St. Ruprecht is a rural and agricultural area. XII. St. Martin
St. Martin is a neighbourhood south of the Innere Stadt. It bears the name of the 18th century St. Martin Church. Southeast of the Innere Stadt is Viktring, a district. Comprising over a quarter of Klagenfurt’s total land area, it is the biggest district in the city. Hörtendorf is a neighborhood north of the Innere Stadt. Established in 1991, this is among the newest districts of Klagenfurt. Modern and urban, Hörtendorf boasts numerous fresh projects, infrastructure, and services. Among its green areas are the Hörtendorf Park, Hörtendorf Pond, and Hörtendorf Forest.
XVI. Welzenegg
To the east of the city center is the Welzenegg district. With around 20,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most populated districts of Klagenfurt. With so many different ethnic and religious groups, Welzenegg is a social and cosmopolitan place. Some community and entertainment options, including the Welzenegg Skate Park, Welzenegg Cinema and Community Center.
