The Botanical Garden of the University of Innsbruck is a two-hectare living collection in Hötting, immediately north-west of the central city and directly below the limestone mountains of the Nordkette. More than 7,000 plant species are cultivated here for research, teaching, conservation and public education, but the garden also works extremely well as a calm visitor stop between Innsbruck’s historic centre and its higher slopes. The outdoor grounds are free, open every day of the year except 1 January and 24 December, and divided into sections that make a short visit easy to structure: an Alpinum for mountain plants, a systematic garden, arboretum, medicinal and crop plant garden, prairie and fern areas, cacti and succulents, and a barrier-free scent and tactile garden. Tropical and subtropical display houses add a separate indoor component with limited afternoon opening hours. That tradition reaches back long before the current Hötting site. The University traces its first botanical garden to 1793, when Johann Nepomuk Laicharding and the court apothecary Matthias Schöpfer established a garden for academic use near the former Jesuit college. It declined during the disruptions of the Napoleonic period, recovered after the University was restored and expanded in the nineteenth century as natural-science teaching became more important. Anton Kerner von Marilaun, professor of natural history in Innsbruck from 1860 to 1878, made Alpine plants a particular strength and in 1875 established an experimental high-mountain garden on the Blaser near Trins, an important predecessor of modern alpine gardens. By the early twentieth century the old inner-city garden was too small for growing research demands. New land in Hötting was acquired from 1906, and the botanical institute and garden were developed there in the years that followed.
The setting makes the collection unusually coherent. The garden lies at roughly 600 metres above sea level on a south-facing slope, with the Nordkette visible beyond. The Alpinum therefore does not feel like an artificial rock garden placed in a flat urban park. It displays mountain plants from the Rockies, European ranges, the Caucasus and Central Asia in a city already defined by altitude and mountain climate. The University emphasises scientific organisation rather than decorative mixing, and the garden’s long Alpine research tradition gives this section special authority. Elsewhere, the tropical houses create the opposite effect: within minutes you move from dry high-mountain adaptations to humid rainforest and subtropical environments. Practical planning is simple, but the greenhouses need separate attention. From April through October the outdoor garden opens Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:00 and weekends/public holidays from 08:00 to 19:00; from November through March it closes at 17:00. The tropical display houses currently open Thursday to Sunday from 13:00 to 15:30, with an adult ticket of €4 and concessions published separately. Dogs are not allowed. Bus lines A and H stop at the main entrance, and the University estimates the walk from central Innsbruck at about fifteen minutes. Allow at least an hour for the outdoor highlights, and closer to two if the display houses are open or if you want to read the scientific labels rather than simply stroll.

From a 1793 teaching garden to a modern research collection
The first Innsbruck botanical garden was established for academic teaching in 1793, at a time when botany still sat closely beside medicine, pharmacy and natural history. Early university gardens were practical laboratories: students needed living specimens to learn identification, morphology and useful plants, while professors needed controlled spaces for experiment and demonstration. Innsbruck’s first garden occupied ground near the old university and former Jesuit complex, embedded directly in the city rather than in a suburban research campus.
Political disruption repeatedly affected the institution. The University was reorganised and temporarily dissolved during the Napoleonic era, and the garden declined. After the University was restored in 1826, botanical teaching revived, and nineteenth-century reforms strengthened the natural sciences. A greenhouse was eventually built, the plant collection expanded and the garden became increasingly important for specialist research rather than merely supporting general natural-history lessons.
Anton Kerner von Marilaun gave Innsbruck’s Alpine botany international significance. His work on mountain plants and the experimental garden he established at Blaser in 1875 anticipated the alpine-garden tradition that now appears in botanical institutions around the world. The present Alpinum is part of that intellectual lineage. It treats mountain plants as ecological and geographical subjects rather than decorative rockery material, arranging them according to origin and scientific questions.
By the turn of the twentieth century, the old inner-city garden could no longer support expanding research. The University archive describes the creation of the Hötting garden and new botany institute between 1906 and 1910 as one of the most important infrastructure improvements for Innsbruck’s natural sciences. The move roughly doubled available garden area and placed research closer to the mountain environment that had already become central to Innsbruck botany. That relocation created the foundation for the visitor garden seen today.

The outdoor garden is free and easy to enter, so the main planning question is season. April through October offers the longest hours and the greatest variety of flowering outdoor plants. Weekdays open at 07:30 and close at 19:00; weekends and public holidays open at 08:00. November through March closes at 17:00. Winter is quieter and shifts attention toward plant structure, evergreen collections and the greenhouses rather than outdoor flower display.
The tropical display houses currently open Thursday through Sunday from 13:00 to 15:30. Older University pages still show a previous Tuesday/Thursday/first-Sunday schedule and lower ticket price, but the dedicated current opening-hours page is the appropriate operational source for 2026. If the houses are important to your visit, plan around that page rather than a cached tourism listing. The outdoor garden itself remains worthwhile even when the houses are closed.
Bus lines A and H stop by the main entrance, while walking from central Innsbruck takes about fifteen minutes according to the University. There is no dedicated visitor car park, so driving offers little advantage; paid short-stay parking is available in surrounding streets. Wheelchair users should use the main south entrance. Dogs are prohibited throughout the garden.
Private photography is allowed, but visitors must remain on paths, avoid disturbing plants and leave labels where they are. Commercial and editorial shoots require permission, and outside guides must coordinate with the garden. These rules reflect the site’s research role. Beds may contain experimental or conservation material that is more vulnerable than ordinary ornamental planting.

The strongest visit is not about seeing every species; it is about understanding how the garden organises living diversity into questions about environment, evolution, use and conservation.
If you are choosing between this garden and the separate Alpengarten Patscherkofel, note that they serve different purposes. The Hötting garden is an accessible urban research collection with global sections and greenhouses; the Patscherkofel site is a high-elevation alpine garden near 2,000 metres and is not barrier-free. First-time visitors with limited time should usually choose Hötting for breadth, while keen botanists can use both to compare cultivated Alpine plants at two very different elevations.
A final planning advantage is that the garden works well without advance booking. Guided tours add expert interpretation, but independent visitors can still follow clear thematic sections at their own pace. That makes the site useful both for spontaneous city breaks and for travellers who build a more specialised botanical itinerary around Innsbruck.
