Breitenebenalm is a family-oriented mountain hut above Großarl in Salzburg province, sitting at 1,420 metres and reached from the Sonneggweg side of the valley. Unlike high huts that demand a long climb, it is promoted by the Großarltal tourism association as an easy-to-reach hiking destination for families and mountain bikers. The current official route from the Breiteneben Schranke parking area is about 2.2 kilometres out and back, takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and involves roughly 170 metres of ascent. The forest road is described as suitable for pushchairs, with the sensible warning that pushing a stroller uphill still requires fitness and a reasonably all-terrain model. This combination of short approach, mountain scenery and a substantial food stop makes Breitenebenalm one of the more accessible ways to add an alpine-hut experience to a Großarl stay.
As of 10 September 2026 the hut is open and has unusually precise current hours. Großarltal tourism lists 08:30–19:00 Monday through Friday, 08:30–20:30 on Saturday and 08:30–19:00 on Sunday for the current period running into 4 October 2026. Travellers visiting after 4 October should not simply carry them forward; autumn closing dates and later seasonal operation need a fresh check. The same applies to special events or weather interruptions.
The Breitenebenalm’s appeal is not just ease of access. Regional tourism presents it as a place for both savoury alpine food and sweet dishes, and older but still maintained Großarltal destination material highlights items such as apple strudel, Kaiserschmarrn, blueberry pancakes and Buchteln alongside roast pork, cheese dumplings, salads and an alpine burger. The exact menu can change, but the pattern is clear: this is a full refreshment stop rather than a drinks-only hut. The large terrace is an obvious draw in settled weather, while indoor seating gives the outing a better chance of working when conditions are cooler.
Families have more to do than simply sit at the table. Großarltal material mentions a playground, small animals or a wildlife enclosure and a trout pond. These features help explain why the hut is repeatedly framed as a family destination. They should not, however, distract from the fact that children still need appropriate footwear and supervision on the approach. The forest road may be straightforward by mountain standards, but it remains an outdoor route with gradient, changing weather and natural surfaces.
Access is most commonly organised around the Breiteneben Schranke parking area. The official hiking description directs drivers or hiking-taxi users via Sonneggweg in the Au district to the Sonneggbrücke and then onward to the barrier parking. From there the route uses forest-road sections and shortcuts through the woods. Visitors with a pushchair should stay with the more suitable forest-road option rather than choosing steeper shortcuts. The current tourism pages do not provide enough detail to call the complete experience wheelchair-accessible, so wheelchair users should contact the hut or tourism office before assuming the stroller-friendly road will meet their needs.
Breitenebenalm also works as a gateway to a larger hiking day. Großarltal promotes longer routes linking it with Großwildalm, Saukaralm and other surrounding huts, so fit walkers can treat the hut as the first or intermediate food stop rather than the endpoint. That flexibility is useful when groups contain different fitness levels: one party can enjoy the short Breiteneben outing while stronger hikers continue farther. The key is to decide the day’s objective before ordering a leisurely meal, because later extensions require more elevation, time and weather margin than the easy approach to Breitenebenalm itself.
For travellers comparing Grossarl’s many alpine huts, Breitenebenalm is particularly strong when the goal is inclusiveness. It allows a family, an older traveller with reasonable walking ability, or a mixed-pace group to share the same destination without forcing everyone into a demanding summit route. That does not make the outing trivial: 170 metres of ascent is still exercise, and mountain weather can turn quickly. What changes is the margin for choice. Visitors can shorten the day after lunch, take the forest road instead of steeper shortcuts, or use the hut as a staging point for a bigger hike if conditions and energy are good.
