Friedenskircherl

At 1898 meters above sea level, on Stoderzinken mountain in the Austrian province of Styria, is the beautiful Friedenskircherl. Emil Ritter von Horstig built the sanctuary in 1902, and now it is well-known outside the Ennstal area. The Friedenskircherl is unique in that it can only be reached on foot by a certain path and is not dedicated by any one religious group. Those of all denominations are welcome.

The chapel’s grandeur enthralled Styrian folk poet Peter Rosegger, who wrote a poem expressing his admiration. The sun-drenched mountains had given him a deep sense of tranquilly. Quite remarkable. Further highlighting the chapel’s significance was the 1982 release of a stamp honoring its 80th anniversary.

The Friedenskircherl is owned and maintained by the Gröbming, Austrian Mountain Rescue Service, since 1993. Their interest in maintaining the chapel highlights its importance as a cultural and historical monument. The Friedenskircherl’s cultural significance was further increased in 2011 when it was used for filming the third and eleventh seasons of the television series “Die Bergretter”.

An indication of the Friedenskircherl’s continuing appeal was its 2022 win as the most beautiful location in Austria on the ORF television show “9 places – 9 treasures”. It was able to hold the top spot among other rivals.

From either of the Stoderzinken car parks, a 20-minute walk takes tourists to the Friedenskircherl. On the other hand, those who have climbed before, are comfortable with heights, and have appropriate footwear may climb Stoderzinken in around thirty minutes by taking the Florasteig path. Accessible to anybody interested in the cultural and natural beauty of the Stoderzinken mountain, the chapel’s appeal is further increased.

Christuskirche - Grobming, Austria Travel Guide

Christuskirche

Christ Church in Gröbming is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination; it is connected to the Evangelical Superintendency AB Styria.

Protestantism in the Gröbminger region began around 1550 thanks to the accommodating attitude of Admont abbot Valentin Abel. In 1570 Martin Schröffel was named Gröbming’s first Lutheran pastor. But in 1599, during the Counter-Reformation, he was fired, against the will of the mostly Protestant community. Gröbming did not at first publicly profess the Protestant faith, as Emperor Joseph II’s Tolerance Patent from 1781 attest to. Only when Protestants from other areas moved to Schladming did affiliated congregations form.

Restored in 1852, the parish of Gröbming was the outcome of the 1848 revolution that introduced religious freedom. Josef Pultar served as the first pastor in the later part of the 1800s.

The Gröbminger pastor Leopold Achberger was named the first superintendent of the AB Styria Evangelical Superintendency in 1947.

The Gröbminger Christuskirche was built between 1850 and 1852 on a free building site given by a kind parishioner. Funding for the church’s June 29, 1853, opening came from the Gustav Adolf Association and the Protestant churches in Schladming and Ramsau. During the 1905–1910 restorations, which also brought Gothic architectural features to the formerly level barrel-vaulted interior, the church tower was elevated and given a pointed headpiece.

The altarpiece, which has figures of Peter and Paul adorning it, was kindly provided by Prussian King Wilhelm I. A three-front panel one-manual organ built by Graz-based organ builder Friedrich Wagner added a musical component to the church.

The historical course of the Christ Church captures the cycles of repression and rebirth that define Protestantism in Gröbming. From its first building to later repairs, the church’s physical evolution demonstrates a commitment to both historical continuity and architectural trend adaptation. Patrons that highlight the church’s cultural significance and wider support include Prussian King Wilhelm I.

Catholic parish church of Gröbming

The Roman Catholic parish church of Gröbming, honoring the feast of the Assumption of Mary, is located in the elevated market town of Gröbming in the Liezen area of Styria. Situated in the Graz-Seckau diocese’s Oberes Ennstal pastoral care region, the chapel is important as a protected monument.

The Church of Gröbming is a well-known sight in the middle of the market town, a massive building perched on a little raised platform. The interior of the church is magnificent and majestic, best shown by a four-bay nave with a prominently designed entrance arch. Similar in breadth, the two-bay choir has an unusual five-eighth note form. A fluted vault supported by profiled pillars adds even more architectural charm. Second-half 19th-century tracery windows in the choir have two or three lanes with an overhead round medallion, while the chancel has three-quarter round arches twisted in a kinked pattern. Side chapels in the southern Gothic style, adorned with 18th-century baroque stucco, flank each side of the entrance arch in the eastern nave bay.

Remarkable is the 1775-built high altar. It includes Salzburg Cathedral sculptures of Saint Virgil, Rupert, and angels from the old high altar. Moreover, the north wall of the choir features a well-preserved late Gothic winged altar that serves as a lay altar as well as a rood screen since 1664. Built at the Lienhart Astl workshop in 1520, this monument was restored between 1950 and 1954. On three levels, the shrine—which is meant to help light travel—features images of Christ and the Twelve Apostles. Remarkable reliefs on the wings, created by Hans Schäufelein using woodcuts, show events like the flagellation, thorn crowning, mourning beneath the cross, and resurrection. The passion scenes shown on the painted weekday pages are inspired by Albrecht Altdorfer’s woodcuts. An illustration of Christ hanging during a storm, surrounded by two criminals and with Mary and John in attendance, improves the visual story even more. The early sixteenth-century seats and the predella, which displays a 1665 picture of St. Rosalia, provide historical and artistic value to the Church of Gröbming.
