Stay Safe & Healthy in Graz

Graz is a generally quite safe city.You are welcome to stroll about Graz day or night without any reservations.Walking the parks and poorly lit paths on the Schloßberg alone should only be done late at night.

Sometimes punk or youth groups define the cityscape on the main square and Jakominiplatz.Still, they are generally composed people who can be stopped from scrounging with a polite but firm answer.But employ caution at night since drunken attacks on Jakominiplatz and the adjacent area are frequent.

During football games, stay away from the area close to Liebenau Stadium.Apart from the regular conflicts between rival fan bases, it’s easy to become a spectator here.

Though you may usually walk about Graz by yourself at night, take in mind the following:

• It is not necessary for women to visit parks alone at night.
• In the evening, avoid intoxicated individuals between Jakominiplatz and Griesplatz.
• Avoid the area near the Merkur Arena (Liebenau) when practicing soccer.

The security authority of the city is the Styrian state police headquarters, which is situated on Straßganger Straße.Attached to it is the 13-station Graz City Police Command, which serves as the guardian body for the city area.Commander of the municipal police since April 2022 is Brigadier Thomas Heiland.

The police were supported by the municipal security guards.Its job is to keep an eye on local security; it undertakes neither road traffic monitoring nor criminal prosecution.
