Weinzöttlbrücke, also written Weinzödlbrücke, is a protected combined road and railway bridge across the Mur at the northern edge of Graz, linking Gösting on the west bank with Andritz and St. Veit-Weinzödl on the east. The present reinforced-concrete structure was designed in connection with architect Max Fabiani and engineer Rudolf Saliger and built between 1917 and 1922. It still carries the B67/Grazer Straße road crossing and the industrial railway connection toward Andritz. This dual function is the main reason the bridge is historically important: it was conceived not merely as a road bridge but as infrastructure connecting industrial districts, factories and regional traffic across the river.

The crossing itself is older than the twentieth-century bridge. The Eggenberg lords received permission in 1673 to build an earlier wooden bridge across the Mur in this area. That timber crossing stood at a different or adjacent alignment and served local movement for generations. When the modern Weinzöttlbrücke opened, the older roadway was removed, though surviving piers were temporarily reused for a pedestrian footbridge opened in 1923. The old remains were finally removed in the 1950s. This sequence shows how important the northern Mur crossing had become long before the current concrete structure existed.

The modern project emerged from industrial pressure. Before the First World War, local manufacturers promoted a rail connection linking Gösting with Andritz and industrial sites. Wartime constraints reduced the original ambitions, but work on the industrial railway began in 1917. The Weinzöttlbrücke became the principal structure in a route that required multiple crossings of roads and waterways. The bridge was built to carry both normal-gauge industrial rail and road traffic, a technically demanding combination that helps explain its later heritage protection.

The bridge measures roughly 120 metres between abutments in historical technical descriptions. It uses two principal openings of around 33 metres and an additional flood opening, reflecting the need to cross both the main Mur channel and high-water conditions. The structure was designed in reinforced concrete at a time when the material was still becoming standard for large transport infrastructure. Max Fabiani is credited with the architectural design, while Rudolf Saliger was responsible for structural engineering. Fabiani is better known internationally for architecture and urban planning, making the bridge a particularly interesting example of his work outside conventional buildings.

Construction was complicated by the First World War and the unstable economic years that followed. A temporary wooden bridge supported early railway operations while the concrete bridge was built in stages. Rail traffic moved onto the permanent structure before the full road bridge was finished. The final load testing took place in 1922, and on 3 December 1922 the bridge was formally opened to traffic in the presence of Austrian Federal President Michael Hainisch.

The bridge remains active infrastructure more than a century later. The State of Styria described it in 2007 as an important connection between Andritz and Gösting and noted that it continued to carry both road users and the Andritz industrial railway. Serious structural deterioration discovered in the mid-2000s led to a major renovation in 2007. Because the bridge had been protected as a monument in 2004, restoration had to preserve historical lighting fixtures and treat concrete elements with heritage-sensitive methods. The rehabilitation demonstrates that industrial heritage survives only through substantial technical maintenance.

Current heritage records continue to list the “Neue Weinzödl-Murbrücke” as protected on both the Andritz and Gösting sides of the municipal boundary. The current crossing is still part of the B67 road network. Industrial rail use has become less frequent than in the twentieth century, but the tracks and combined bridge identity remain historically important. Travellers should therefore understand the structure as working infrastructure, not an abandoned industrial monument.

There is no admission fee or opening schedule. The bridge can be crossed as part of the public road and pedestrian network whenever normal traffic conditions allow. There are pedestrian routes, but the environment is dominated by road infrastructure rather than a scenic promenade. The bridge stands near major roads, industrial land and sports facilities, and the Mur banks in this northern area do not offer the same continuous tourist riverside experience found near the Old Town.

Accessibility for basic crossing is practical because the bridge has road-level pedestrian provision and nearby public-transport stops are marked wheelchair accessible in current open mapping. However, traffic noise and proximity to vehicles make the experience less comfortable than central pedestrian bridges. Visitors should stay on designated walkways and avoid stopping where they obstruct cyclists or road users.

Public transport is available at the Weinzödlbrücke stops on the Andritz side, and the crossing is also close to Shopping Nord and the sports grounds. A bridge-focused visit normally takes fifteen to thirty minutes. The strongest itinerary combines it with northern Graz industrial or transport history rather than treating it as a scenic standalone destination. Schloss St. Gotthard, St. Veit and Gösting provide additional context nearby.

Weinzöttlbrücke matters because it embodies the infrastructure of industrial Graz. A seventeenth-century wooden crossing became a twentieth-century combined road-and-rail concrete bridge, survived technical deterioration, received monument protection and still carries traffic. Its heritage value is not based on decorative beauty alone. It comes from the way engineering, architecture, industrial logistics and the geography of the Mur were brought together in one durable structure.

From the Eggenberg wooden bridge to a permanent northern Mur crossing

The earliest documented bridge tradition in this area reaches to the seventeenth century. The Eggenberg lords received permission in 1673 to build a wooden crossing over the Mur.

A timber bridge was appropriate to the technology and traffic of the period but remained vulnerable to river conditions and maintenance. Northern Graz was still a landscape of villages, estates and roads rather than an integrated industrial city.

The old bridge remained important enough that its alignment influenced later crossings. After the modern concrete bridge was built, surviving piers were reused for a pedestrian footbridge opened in 1923.

That pedestrian structure survived until the 1950s, when the remaining old bridge elements were finally removed. By then the twentieth-century Weinzöttlbrücke had become the dominant crossing.

This continuity is useful for visitors because it shows that the site was strategically important long before Andritz and Gösting became modern Graz districts. The current bridge belongs to a much longer history of linking the two riverbanks.

Why industry demanded a road-and-rail bridge

The modern bridge was driven by industrial transport needs. Before the First World War, manufacturers promoted a rail connection from Gösting toward Andritz and other industrial sites.

The planned route needed to serve factories as well as general traffic. This encouraged a combined bridge rather than separate road and railway structures.

Work began during wartime conditions in 1917. Materials, labour and financing were difficult, and the original scope of transport proposals was reduced. Even so, the industrial railway remained strategically important enough to continue.

The bridge became the main engineering work in a route that required multiple smaller crossings. Its ability to carry rail and road traffic gave it a heavier structural responsibility than an ordinary local bridge.

This industrial origin explains the location. The bridge does not connect two tourist districts; it connects the transport geography of Andritz, Gösting and the northern Mur corridor.

Industrial rail was especially important to Andritz because large machinery and raw materials could not be moved efficiently through ordinary city streets. A direct rail crossing linked factories with the wider railway network and reduced dependence on transshipment. The bridge was therefore part of a logistics system, not simply a connection between two neighbourhoods.

Max Fabiani, Rudolf Saliger and reinforced-concrete engineering

Max Fabiani is best known as an architect and urban planner, particularly through work in Vienna, Ljubljana and the wider Habsburg cultural world. His association with Weinzöttlbrücke shows a less familiar infrastructure dimension.

Rudolf Saliger provided structural-engineering expertise. The partnership reflects the way major bridges combine architecture, calculation and construction rather than belonging to one discipline.

The bridge was executed in reinforced concrete, a material whose use in large infrastructure was still developing rapidly in the early twentieth century. Historical descriptions record two large main openings and an additional flood opening.

River engineering was essential. The Mur could produce high water, and the bridge needed to handle both ordinary flow and flood conditions while carrying heavy railway and road loads.

The result was practical rather than ornamental, but heritage authorities later recognized the technical and architectural importance of the structure. Its monument protection reflects the bridge as an engineering document of its time.

Construction through war, temporary bridges and the 1922 opening

Construction stretched across the final years of the First World War and the difficult post-war period. Temporary timber works were required so industrial rail operations could begin before the permanent bridge was complete.

Rail traffic was transferred onto the concrete bridge before the roadway was fully finished. This staged use demonstrates how urgently industrial connections were needed.

By 1921 the downstream half and roadway work were progressing toward completion. Granite paving and asphalt pedestrian zones formed part of the finished bridge surface.

Load testing took place in August 1922. On 3 December 1922 the bridge was formally opened to traffic in the presence of Federal President Michael Hainisch.

The opening marked the completion of infrastructure that had survived war, political change and economic instability. The bridge entered service in the First Austrian Republic even though its planning had begun under the Habsburg monarchy.

The long construction period also demonstrates the resilience of infrastructure planning. The project crossed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, wartime shortage and the economic instability of the new republic. Its completion in 1922 therefore belonged to both an older imperial industrial plan and the modernization needs of post-war Austria.

Monument protection and the 2007 structural rehabilitation

By the early twenty-first century, decades of traffic, weather and concrete aging had caused serious damage. Inspections identified the need for urgent general rehabilitation.

The bridge had already received monument protection in 2004 because of its age and unusual construction. This meant rehabilitation could not simply replace historical details with standard modern components.

The 2007 project restored concrete surfaces and required the historical lighting fixtures to be retained or reconstructed. Road traffic was heavily restricted during the works, while bus and industrial needs shaped temporary arrangements.

The State of Styria described the bridge as crucial to the connection between Andritz and Gösting. Repair therefore served both heritage conservation and daily mobility.

This case is useful for understanding industrial heritage. Protecting a bridge does not mean freezing it. It means maintaining structural safety while preserving the features that make the engineering historically significant.

The restoration also protected evidence of early reinforced-concrete practice. Concrete bridges can appear visually ordinary today because the material is everywhere, but an early twentieth-century structure carries information about design standards, reinforcement methods and the confidence engineers were beginning to place in reinforced concrete.

How to see the bridge safely today

Weinzöttlbrücke is active infrastructure and has no tourist admission or visitor centre. Use the public pedestrian areas and obey road, rail and construction signs.

The current bridge links the B67 road network across the Mur and remains associated with the industrial railway. Rail movements can be infrequent, but tracks should always be treated as operational infrastructure.

Nearby Weinzödlbrücke public-transport stops provide access on the Andritz side, and open mapping marks the stop facilities as wheelchair accessible. Shopping Nord and sports facilities are also nearby.

The area is traffic-heavy and not designed as a quiet scenic viewpoint. Fifteen to thirty minutes is sufficient for a bridge-focused stop.

The best reason to visit is specialist interest in transport, industrial history or Max Fabiani. For a casual city visitor, the bridge works better as part of a northern-Graz route than as a standalone attraction.

A good specialist route can pair the bridge with Andritz industrial heritage, Gösting’s historical development and the nearby Mur power infrastructure. This reveals a northern Graz shaped by factories, rail, roads and river engineering rather than by the palace-and-church landscape of the Old Town.

Its working life is the monument.
