UniGraz@Museum is the main public museum of the University of Graz, located in the basement of the university’s historic main building at Universitätsplatz 3. Across roughly 500 square metres, it introduces more than four centuries of university history and gives particular attention to the development of physics, scientific instruments and the way research is communicated to society. The museum is not simply a display of portraits and old academic memorabilia. Its permanent exhibition includes hands-on physics demonstrations, the world’s longest wave machine, what the University describes as the largest digital book, a ship’s chronometer, Austria’s oldest preserved laser apparatus and a tunnel microscope that works without conventional light or optical lenses. In 2026, a major temporary exhibition on democracy adds a strong social and political dimension to the scientific collection.

The University of Graz was founded in 1585, so the museum’s time span reaches back to the Jesuit origins of one of Central Europe’s long-established universities. The institution’s archives preserve records from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, while later academic collections document teaching and research through objects. UniGraz@Museum turns part of that material inheritance into a public narrative. The wider University Museums organization calls itself the “material memory” of the university, an accurate description because instruments, artworks, honours, criminological objects and other collections record how knowledge was created, taught and valued in different periods.

Physics is the most immediately interactive part of the visit. Historical instruments are presented alongside demonstrations that let visitors experience principles rather than only read about them. The wave machine makes propagation visible across an unusually long apparatus. The angular-momentum chair allows visitors to feel how rotation changes when body position changes. Magdeburg hemispheres demonstrate atmospheric pressure and physical force. These activities make the museum suitable for families and school groups without turning it into a generic science centre. The experiments are anchored in the University’s own research and teaching history.

Scientific instruments also reveal how knowledge depends on technology. A ship’s chronometer made precise navigation possible by keeping accurate time. Early laser equipment records the arrival of a technology that transformed physics, medicine, industry and communication. The tunnel microscope represents a very different way of seeing: it can investigate surfaces at scales where ordinary optical methods no longer work. By placing such objects within a university museum, the exhibition connects scientific ideas with the material devices that allowed researchers to test, measure and observe them.

The current temporary exhibition “Experiencing democracy. Your voice. Your vote. Your future…” has been on view since 24 June 2025 and remains advertised as the current temporary exhibition in September 2026. It traces ideas of democracy from ancient Greece through early-modern revivals to contemporary political participation. Rather than treating democracy as a completed historical achievement, the programme asks how people participate, whose voices are heard and how democratic systems can be strengthened or weakened. Special guided tours in 2026 have focused on women in democracy and on specific historical threats to democratic institutions, showing that the exhibition is designed for discussion as much as object display.

The museum’s opening pattern is limited but precise. Regular public hours are Monday from 10:00 to 15:00 and Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 to 13:00. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays are closed for normal walk-in visitors. Flexible guided tours can be booked outside those hours by prior arrangement.

Admission is modest. Adults pay €5 without a guide and €7 with a guided tour. Reduced visitors including young people, seniors, people doing military or community service and people with special needs pay €2 without a guide or €3 with one. Students and staff of the University of Graz enter free with proof of status, as do Kulturpass holders. A Styrian Family Pass ticket is €8. These rates make the museum easy to add to a university-quarter visit without requiring a major budget decision.

Accessibility is straightforward for the main museum. The University Museums state that UniGraz@Museum is accessible via the elevator on the north side of the main university building. The University’s wider campus is served by multiple bus routes, including 30, 31, 39, 41, 58 and 63. Stops such as Universität, Uni/Mensa, Uni/Beethovenstraße and Geidorfplatz place the museum within a dense public-transport network. The historic main building can also be reached on foot from Stadtpark and the Old Town.

The museum is especially useful for travellers who want to understand the University of Graz as more than a collection of current faculties. The campus has produced generations of researchers, teachers and students, and the museum shows how university life leaves physical traces. Historical instruments can become obsolete for research yet remain valuable evidence of how questions were once asked. A democracy exhibition can use a university setting to connect scholarship with civic life. The institution’s current research in museology and university heritage extends that role beyond display into the study of how collections themselves should be preserved and interpreted.

Allow sixty to ninety minutes for the museum, longer if taking a guided tour or engaging carefully with the democracy exhibition. A campus tour can be booked separately and adds architectural and historical sites linked with Nobel Prize winners, lecture halls and other university spaces. The museum combines naturally with Leechkirche, the Botanical Garden, Rosenhain and the wider Geidorf district. UniGraz@Museum is strongest when approached as a university telling its own material history while also asking what a university museum should do in the present.

More than 400 years of university history in material form

The University of Graz was founded in 1585 and passed through major institutional changes including the end of the Jesuit period, state reforms, expansion of modern disciplines and twentieth-century political upheavals. Documents record these changes, but objects reveal different kinds of evidence.

Scientific instruments show what researchers could measure. Awards and insignia show how academic status was represented. Paintings and gifts reflect relationships between the university, individuals and public institutions.

The University Museums organization describes itself as the material memory of the university because it preserves these objects while also researching their provenance and meaning. This is a useful distinction from an archive, which primarily preserves records and documents.

The current museum is part of a wider collection landscape that includes the Hans Gross Museum of Criminology, historical physics holdings, artworks, plaster casts, gifts and university honours. Not everything can be displayed at once.

The museum therefore selects representative objects rather than attempting to show the whole university. A visitor should read each instrument or artefact as evidence of a broader academic practice: teaching, research, collecting, ceremonial life or public communication.

This selective nature is also a museum lesson in itself. Universities create enormous quantities of material, and curators decide what deserves long-term preservation as academic heritage.

University collections often began as working tools rather than museum objects. A professor acquired an instrument because students needed to see an experiment; a department kept specimens because research required comparison; ceremonial gifts entered offices rather than galleries. Only later did some of these objects acquire heritage value. UniGraz@Museum makes that change of status visible: equipment once valued for usefulness is now valuable because it records how knowledge was produced.

Physics you can see, touch and test

The permanent physics section is the most interactive part of UniGraz@Museum. Historical apparatus sits beside demonstrations that allow visitors to experience forces and motion directly.

The world’s longest wave machine turns an abstract topic into visible movement. Waves travel through a long mechanical system, making propagation, reflection and interference easier to understand than through equations alone.

The angular-momentum chair uses the visitor’s own body. Changing the position of arms or masses alters rotational speed, reproducing the principle familiar from figure skaters pulling their arms inward during a spin.

Magdeburg hemispheres demonstrate atmospheric pressure. When air is removed from between joined hemispheres, separating them becomes surprisingly difficult. The experiment has a long history in physics demonstrations and remains effective because the force can be felt.

An influencing machine and other apparatus bring electrostatics and experimental curiosity into the gallery. These stations make the museum especially suitable for families and school groups, but adults should not skip them. Physical experience can clarify principles that remain abstract in text.

The interactive approach also reflects university teaching history. Demonstration instruments were designed to make invisible forces visible for students, so hands-on interpretation continues an old pedagogical tradition rather than simply adding entertainment.

Chronometers, lasers and microscopes as evidence of changing research

Scientific progress often depends on improved instruments. A ship’s chronometer, for example, made accurate timekeeping possible under difficult conditions and transformed navigation by supporting reliable longitude calculation.

The museum’s oldest preserved Austrian laser apparatus represents a much later technological revolution. Lasers emerged from twentieth-century physics and quickly became tools across research, medicine, manufacturing and communication.

The tunnel microscope pushes observation into another scale. Instead of relying on visible light and optical lenses, scanning tunnelling microscopy uses quantum effects to investigate surfaces at atomic dimensions.

These objects span very different scientific worlds, but all show the same pattern: a question becomes researchable only when someone can build a device precise enough to measure or manipulate the relevant phenomenon.

Museum display changes their function. A laser no longer used in the laboratory becomes historical evidence; a chronometer becomes a record of precision engineering; a microscope becomes a way to explain how seeing can occur without conventional optics.

The museum also addresses scientific ethics, reminding visitors that instruments and discoveries are not socially neutral. Research creates possibilities, but universities also have to consider responsibility, consequences and the public use of knowledge.

Instrument history also prevents an overly simple story of scientific progress. New devices do not always make old ones meaningless overnight. Different techniques coexist, laboratories adapt equipment and teaching demonstrations may remain useful long after frontier research moves on. A museum collection can preserve these overlaps, showing science as practical work with budgets, available technology and inherited methods rather than a clean sequence of discoveries.

Experiencing Democracy: the current temporary exhibition

“Experiencing democracy. Your voice. Your vote. Your future…” opened on 24 June 2025 and remains the University Museums’ current temporary exhibition in September 2026. It broadens the museum beyond scientific history into a subject directly connected with public life.

The exhibition traces democratic ideas back to ancient Greece but avoids presenting antiquity as a complete model for modern democracy. Participation was restricted, and later political systems repeatedly reinterpreted what popular rule should mean.

Early-modern and modern developments show how concepts of rights, representation, equality and citizenship expanded through conflict. The exhibition then connects these histories with contemporary questions about voting, participation and threats to democratic institutions.

Interactive formats encourage visitors to think about their own role. The University has used special guided tours and festival programmes to make the exhibition a space for discussion rather than a static civics lesson.

A 2026 special tour on women in democracy connected figures such as Olympe de Gouges with contemporary struggles for women’s rights. Another university programme examined how democratic institutions in Austria were dismantled in 1933.

The university setting is appropriate. Academic freedom and democratic society are historically connected, and a university museum can provide evidence and debate without pretending that political systems are self-maintaining.

The democracy exhibition also benefits from being temporary rather than absorbed permanently into a generalized university-history story. A focused exhibition can respond to current public concerns, add lectures and guided tours, and change as debate develops. This flexibility demonstrates one of the University Museums' stated aims: using academic collections and research to create public discussion rather than treating heritage as a closed account of the past.

Why the University Museums also research museums themselves

The University Museums are not only a service unit that mounts exhibitions. They describe themselves as a centre for university collections, museum communication and general museology within the University of Graz.

Research areas include the history of collecting, documentation, digitisation, provenance, postcolonial perspectives and the role of universities as cultural-heritage institutions. This work affects how collections are catalogued and interpreted.

A current international project examines colonial legacies of universities and includes partner institutions across Europe, Africa and South America. The Graz University Museums lead work on the museological treatment of colonial collections.

This research matters to ordinary visitors because it changes labels, acquisition policies and the questions curators ask. An object is not only “what is it?” but also “how did it enter the university, who defined its value and what histories may have been omitted?”

The unit also publishes the MUSEA journal on museology and museum practice and participates in university-heritage networks. UniGraz@Museum is therefore connected with a professional research field beyond its public galleries.

Future plans for 2025–2030 envision bringing more university collections together in a larger single University Museum under a concept focused on experiencing science. The current museum is part of an evolving institutional project rather than a final permanent form.

Provenance research is particularly important in university collections because institutions accumulated material through expeditions, colonial networks, teaching exchanges and donations whose power relationships were not always documented critically. The current COLUMN project places Graz within an international effort to examine those histories with partner institutions outside Europe as well as within it. This research gives the University Museums a contemporary relevance that extends beyond preserving old instruments.

Opening hours, tickets, accessibility and campus combinations

Regular public hours are Monday 10:00–15:00 and Wednesday and Friday 10:00–13:00. Tuesday and Thursday are closed, as are Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Guided tours can be booked flexibly outside normal hours by prior arrangement.

Adult admission is €5 without a tour and €7 with one. Reduced admission is €2 or €3 depending on whether a guide is included. Students and employees of the University of Graz and Kulturpass holders enter free with appropriate proof.

The museum is in the basement of the main building at Universitätsplatz 3. Barrier-free access is via the elevator on the north side. Visitors with specific access needs can contact the museum team before a guided visit.

The campus is served by buses 30, 31, 39, 41, 58 and 63, with several university stops around the main building. Walking from Stadtpark or the eastern Old Town is also realistic.

Allow sixty to ninety minutes. A guided tour is worthwhile for visitors who want deeper explanation of physics instruments or the democracy exhibition, while families may prefer the freedom of the interactive stations.

The museum combines naturally with Leechkirche, the University Library, Botanical Garden and Rosenhain. Separately bookable campus tours add Nobel Prize history, lecture rooms and architectural sites beyond the basement museum.

Because regular walk-in hours are short, timing matters. Monday offers the longest independent visit window, while Wednesday and Friday close at 13:00. Travellers who cannot match those periods should request a guided appointment rather than assume the main university building's longer general opening hours also apply to the museum.

The museum is also a good rainy-day choice in the university quarter, but its short opening windows mean it should be scheduled before flexible outdoor stops such as Rosenhain or a campus walk.

Plan the museum first, then build the rest of the district visit around it.
