Graz guide
From Open Ice to a Graz Landmark
The original Liebenau ice facility developed in stages during the 1960s. City architectural documentation says the site began with an open ice surface and later gained spectator infrastructure and the roof that became its defining architectural element. The arena’s first major era coincided with the growth of organized ice hockey in Graz.
The suspended roof uses a three-dimensionally curved concrete edge and hanging cables. When created, this structural solution was innovative in Austria. The roof’s unusual engineering and cityscape presence later led to monument protection. Locals also gave the heavy concrete arena the affectionate nickname “Bunker.”
The 1963 opening made Liebenau the home of major ice sport in Graz. Over subsequent decades the building accommodated hockey, figure skating, ice stock sport and many non-ice events. That multi-use tradition explains why the arena has always required more than a simple rink-and-stands layout.
For visitors, the historic value is best understood from outside and during an event. The roof remains the key original feature even though most technical systems and many public areas have been renewed.

The 2015–16 Modernization
After more than fifty years of use, the arena had reached the end of its technical and functional life in many areas. The city chose renovation rather than demolition because of the protected roof. Work in 2015 and 2016 renewed building services, concrete, spectator areas and back-of-house spaces while preserving the architectural identity.
The project was closely linked to preparations for the 2017 Special Olympics. New northern areas improved media, hospitality and operational functions. The result is not a museum restoration but a working arena where old structure and new sport technology coexist.
City project records say the modernization cost tens of millions of euros across several measures, with support from the State of Styria. A second package later extended the sports district with additional training and event infrastructure.
The renovation is a useful example of adaptive preservation. Monument protection did not freeze the building; it required designers to solve modern safety and performance needs without discarding the distinctive roof.

Graz99ers, Figure Skating and Event Use
The main Merkur Eisstadion is home to the Graz99ers, making ice hockey the most visible spectator use. Home games create the arena atmosphere many visitors associate with the venue. Ticket prices, doors and security are event-specific.
Figure skating is also important. Skate Austria records show the nextgen ICESTARS event taking place here in March 2026, with multiple age and competition categories. This confirms that the arena remains a significant competition venue beyond hockey.
The hall has historically hosted other sports and entertainment events when the ice surface is covered or reconfigured. That flexibility is part of the complex’s long operating model. Visitors should never assume that “ice stadium” means ice is available every day of the year.
For event attendance, use the organiser’s exact entrance and start time. The sports district includes neighbouring football infrastructure, and simultaneous events can alter traffic and pedestrian routes.

Choosing the Right Kind of Visit
Hockey fans should begin with the Graz99ers fixture list. Figure-skating visitors should watch Skate Austria and MCG calendars. Casual skaters should check Hall B for the confirmed seasonal public-skating schedule.
Do not build an itinerary around last season’s public hours. The current early-September 2026 evidence shows the venue active, but the 2026/27 general skating timetable has not yet been reliably published. Direct confirmation is the correct solution.
Architecture enthusiasts can include the exterior while visiting Liebenau or Murpark, but the arena is not a general daytime museum. The most meaningful interior experience comes from seeing the building doing what it was designed to do: host ice sport.
Families planning public skating should also confirm skate-rental availability, sizes and any helmet recommendations for children. These practical details can change with the season and should be checked with the current operator.
Season boundaries deserve special caution. Public skating in Graz generally begins later in September, while the arena remains busy with clubs and professional preparation before that. A September visitor should therefore distinguish “ice exists in the complex” from “public skating is available today.” The operator’s current session notice must settle that question.
A final practical check close to the visit date is worthwhile at Merkur Eisstadion. Stable history and location should be separated from volatile operational details such as construction, events, opening periods and service availability. Current primary information should override older travel listings whenever those details differ.
