The Botanical Garden of the University of Graz is a 2.8-hectare living collection, research site and public garden at Schubertstraße 59 in the Geidorf district, close to Hilmteich and the University of Graz campus. Around 7,500 plant species are cultivated across outdoor beds, an arboretum, historic glasshouses and approximately 1,500 square metres of modern greenhouse space. Entry is free. On 2 September 2026 the garden is operating its summer schedule, with outdoor areas and greenhouses open every day from 08:00 to 16:30 through 15 September. From 16 September to 14 May, opening shortens to 08:00–14:30. The garden closes annually from 24 December through 6 January. For travellers, this is both a calm green break from central Graz and a serious university collection whose plants are used for teaching, biodiversity research, conservation and public education.

The garden’s history reaches back more than two centuries. A botanical garden was already part of Archduke Johann’s plans for the Joanneum in 1811, intended for teaching, horticultural knowledge and the propagation of useful plants. In 1843 botanist Franz Xaver Unger reported around 8,000 cultivated species in the original garden. Urban development later forced the institution to leave its first central location, and a new plot on Schubertstraße was acquired in 1874. The modern garden was laid out in the late 1880s, with surviving plants from the old Joanneum garden transferred to the new site. Some cycads in the entrance hall and old trees in the arboretum are still connected with that earlier botanical collection, giving the present garden a living continuity that is unusual even among historic university gardens.

The glasshouses are one of the most recognisable features. Construction of the modern greenhouse complex began in 1989 and the buildings opened on 25 June 1995 after a period of interruption. Visitors can now move through plant communities representing four climate zones. A guided greenhouse tour takes about an hour, while a fuller 90-minute garden tour includes the outdoor collection and historic glasshouse. These tours require registration at least three weeks ahead and are paid even though ordinary self-guided entry is free. In 2026, the garden also maintains an active public programme of themed walks, workshops, talks and events through its Freiland Labor, turning the site into a public science venue as well as a collection.

The garden continues to change with research and educational priorities. Land was added in 1985, creating space that now includes the pond, fern mound and Rosaceae areas, and another later land exchange expanded the garden further. The Bauergarten was established in 2006. The current scientific programme focuses on plant ecology, conservation, climate-change biology and biodiversity. This means labels and plant arrangements are not purely decorative. The collection is a research infrastructure in which living material supports university teaching, comparative study and conservation work. Visitors do not need specialist training to appreciate it, but understanding this purpose explains why some areas look systematic, experimental or educational rather than designed as ornamental public gardens.

The current 2026 exhibition provides an especially accessible theme. “Von Bohne, Erdnuss & Mimose – Fabelhafte Fabaceae!” runs from 14 May 2026 through 31 March 2027 across outdoor areas and greenhouses. It explores the legume family, a group with more than 19,000 species that ranges from beans, peas and lentils to tropical trees and plants with unusual leaf movements or ecological partnerships. The exhibition links everyday food plants with biodiversity, nitrogen fixation and adaptation, making it useful even for visitors who do not normally visit botanical collections. Events around the theme continue into autumn, including a Botanik Brunch on 20 September 2026.

Visitor rules protect the living collections. Guests must remain on designated paths and may not enter beds or meadow areas, remove plants, fruit or seeds, alter labels or damage greenhouse and garden facilities. Smoking is prohibited throughout the greenhouse complex. In storms, thunderstorms or other conditions that threaten personal safety, visitors must leave outdoor areas when instructed. Private photography is allowed, while commercial photography requires university permission. Assistance dogs are welcome, but other pets are not allowed in the garden.

Accessibility is comparatively strong. The outdoor area and historic glasshouse are described by the university as fully accessible, while the show greenhouses are largely barrier-free; raised walkways can be reached by a ramp near the tropical house. Tram line 1 stops at Hilmteich/Botanischer Garten, and the main entrance is only a short walk down Schubertstraße. The university also lists a bus stop named Botanischer Garten, while drivers have limited paid parking in surrounding blue or green zones. For most travellers, public transport or walking from the university district is simpler than searching for a car space.

Allow at least 60–90 minutes for a self-guided visit, and longer if you enjoy plants, photography or the current exhibition. The garden is particularly useful in poor weather because the greenhouse complex remains a substantial indoor attraction, although storms can affect outdoor access. Seasonal change also matters: spring bulbs, summer outdoor collections, autumn foliage and winter greenhouse displays create different experiences. A first visit should combine the show greenhouses with at least one outdoor loop rather than focusing entirely on exotic tropical plants. The garden’s strongest quality is range: within a small university site, travellers can move between global climate zones, old trees, teaching collections, active research and a public science programme without paying an entrance fee.

From the Joanneum garden to Schubertstraße

Archduke Johann’s 1811 plans for the Joanneum included a botanical garden from the beginning. The garden was expected to support teaching, plant care and the spread of useful plants, reflecting the nineteenth-century idea that a scientific garden should combine research, education and practical horticulture. The collection became substantial quickly; by 1843 Franz Xaver Unger counted around 8,000 species.

Urban development around Neutorgasse and Raubergasse eventually made the original site impossible to maintain. In 1874 a new plot was purchased in Schubertstraße, and university botanist H. Leitgeb developed plans for the replacement garden. Construction and planting occurred in 1888 and 1889, with the state receiving the plant stock from the earlier collection.

Not everything from the old garden vanished. The university notes that some cycads in the entrance-hall collection and old arboretum trees originate from the earlier Joanneum garden. These living survivors are especially significant because a tree or long-lived gymnosperm can bridge institutional generations in a way archival photographs cannot.

The garden expanded modestly in the late twentieth century. In 1985 more land was acquired to create areas including the pond and fern mound, and a later exchange added part of the former Postvilla property. The Bauergarten followed in 2006, demonstrating that the garden remains an evolving scientific landscape rather than a preserved nineteenth-century plan.

For travellers, this history is easiest to read through old trees, historic glasshouse structures and the contrast with the modern greenhouse complex. The site condenses two centuries of changing botanical practice into a relatively small urban area.

Greenhouses and four climate zones

The modern show greenhouses are the garden’s architectural landmark. Construction began in 1989 and the complex opened on 25 June 1995 after a temporary construction stop. Their form is immediately recognisable from Schubertstraße and from inside the garden, where glass, metal and planted interior environments contrast with the older outdoor collections.

The university’s guided greenhouse tour is organised around four climate zones. This allows plants to be grouped by environmental conditions rather than only by botanical family. Visitors can compare adaptations to humidity, temperature, drought and other stresses, moving through sharply different atmospheres in a short distance.

Tropical and subtropical collections usually attract the most attention, but desert and dry-climate plants can be equally instructive. Succulent stems, reduced leaves, protective surfaces and root strategies demonstrate how evolution responds to water scarcity. In humid zones, competition for light and diverse leaf forms create another set of adaptations.

The raised walkways in the show greenhouses are reachable via a ramp at the tropical house, helping visitors view plants from different heights. This is useful in tall vegetation where canopy form and climbing plants are difficult to appreciate only from floor level.

A one-hour guided greenhouse tour can be booked at least three weeks ahead. Current prices are €6 for adults and €4 reduced, with a flat rate for very small groups. Independent visitors do not need a tour and enter the greenhouses free during ordinary garden hours.

The greenhouse complex also demonstrates how botanical gardens changed in the late twentieth century. Older glasshouses often functioned primarily as protected cultivation rooms; modern show houses increasingly combine research collections with public interpretation, accessibility and environmental control. Graz’s 1995 complex belongs to that transition. Its four climatic zones let visitors experience plant adaptation directly while the surrounding university infrastructure keeps the collection connected to teaching and research.

Outdoor collections, arboretum and Bauergarten

The outdoor garden is more than landscaping around the glasshouses. The arboretum preserves mature woody plants, while specialist beds demonstrate plant families, ecological groupings and useful plants. A pond, fern mound and Rosaceae area were enabled by the 1985 expansion, adding habitats and collection space that older layouts lacked.

The Bauergarten, established in 2006, adds a deliberately cultivated layer that connects botany with agricultural and domestic plant use. University botanical gardens historically taught useful species alongside taxonomic knowledge, and this area continues that tradition in a contemporary educational setting.

Outdoor collections change more dramatically through the year than greenhouse displays. Spring flowering plants can dominate early visits, summer brings dense growth, and autumn reveals seed, fruit and foliage characters that are easily missed in peak flowering season. Repeat visitors therefore receive a genuinely different botanical experience.

The garden’s current Fabaceae exhibition uses both outdoor and greenhouse spaces. This is effective because the legume family occupies environments from temperate fields to tropical forests. Visitors can see familiar food crops within the same botanical family as plants whose form, ecology or geographic origin feels completely different.

Stay on the paths even when a labelled plant is difficult to see. Research collections are vulnerable to trampling, and some beds may contain experimental or rare material. The garden rules treat the entire cultivated area as scientific infrastructure, not a park lawn open for informal shortcuts.

Research, teaching and the Freiland Labor

The university describes the Botanical Garden as a hub for plant ecology, conservation, climate-change biology and biodiversity research. Living collections allow researchers to compare species under controlled conditions, study responses to environmental change and maintain material that would be difficult to access regularly in the wild.

Teaching is equally important. University students can examine living plants rather than relying only on preserved herbarium material or images. Morphology, ecology, reproductive structures and adaptations become easier to understand when observed through seasons. The garden’s very layout therefore serves scientific education.

The Freiland Labor extends this approach to school groups and the wider public. Workshops and themed tours cover biological questions through hands-on activity, and a glass workshop room in the historic glasshouse keeps parts of the programme viable during bad weather. Winter programming is more limited, but the model operates throughout much of the year.

Public events in 2026 include guided walks, biodiversity programmes, plant markets and the Botanik Brunch. These activities make the garden socially different from a quiet academic collection accessible only to specialists. Researchers, families, school classes and casual walkers can use the same site for different purposes.

Travellers interested in science should check the events calendar before visiting. A themed tour can provide far more interpretation than labels alone, while independent visitors may prefer quieter periods when the paths and glasshouses are less busy.

The living collection is also valuable for conservation because maintaining species outside their natural habitats can support research, teaching and exchange among botanical institutions. Such ex-situ cultivation does not replace habitat protection, but it can preserve material for study and help scientists understand growth, reproduction and environmental tolerance under controlled conditions.

The 2026 Fabaceae exhibition

“Von Bohne, Erdnuss & Mimose – Fabelhafte Fabaceae!” opened in May 2026 and continues until 31 March 2027. The exhibition focuses on the legume family, which includes more than 19,000 species across an enormous ecological and geographic range. Beans, peas, lentils and peanuts provide familiar entry points, but the family also includes trees, shrubs and unusual tropical species.

One major theme is nitrogen fixation. Many legumes form partnerships with bacteria that allow atmospheric nitrogen to become available to plants, influencing soil fertility and agricultural practice. This is why legumes can matter not only as food but as components of crop rotations and ecosystem nutrient cycles.

The exhibition also explores other adaptations, including leaf movement, relationships with insects and occupation of habitats from deserts to rainforests. Presenting these subjects through living plants makes abstract biological concepts more concrete.

Because the displays extend through both greenhouses and outdoor sections, visitors encounter the family repeatedly rather than in one temporary room. This encourages comparison and makes the current exhibition a useful structure for a self-guided visit.

The September Botanik Brunch continues the theme with talks, tours and family programming. Travellers visiting near 20 September 2026 can use that event to deepen the exhibition experience, while ordinary daily visitors can see the displays during regular opening hours without an additional ticket.

The verified summer schedule through 15 September 2026 is daily 08:00–16:30. From 16 September through 14 May, the garden opens daily 08:00–14:30. It closes from 24 December to 6 January. General admission to outdoor collections and greenhouses is free. One English-language university page contains an inconsistent summer-hour line, but the German visitor page and the university’s May 2026 announcement both confirm the 16:30 summer closing time.

Visitors must remain on paths, may not enter beds or lawns designated as collection areas and may not remove plants, fruit, seeds or other material. Smoking is prohibited inside the greenhouse complex. Private photography is allowed; commercial photography requires permission. Assistance dogs are welcome, while other pets are not.

The outdoor area and historic glasshouse are officially described as fully accessible. Show greenhouses are largely barrier-free, and elevated walkways can be reached via the tropical-house ramp. This makes the garden a strong option for travellers who want a botanical attraction with substantial step-free access.

Tram line 1 serves Hilmteich/Botanischer Garten, only a short walk from the Schubertstraße entrance. The university also lists a local bus stop named Botanischer Garten. Limited paid parking is available in surrounding blue and green zones, but public transport is more predictable.

Allow 60–90 minutes for a straightforward visit and two hours for deeper plant study or photography. In summer, arrive earlier for cooler greenhouse conditions and quieter paths. The garden is especially efficient for travellers staying near the university or Hilmteich. Because entry is free, it also works well as a shorter visit between other attractions without creating pressure to spend a fixed amount of time. Its best use is exploratory rather than completionist: follow what is in flower, read the current exhibition and move between climate zones instead of trying to memorise thousands of species. The free-entry model makes repeat seasonal visits especially worthwhile. Seasonal change keeps the collection visually and scientifically fresh.
