Festivals in Gmunden

In Austria’s Salzkammergut area is the quaint village of Gmunden. Its stunning location along Lake Traunsee’s coast is well-known. Famous for its historical and cultural sites include the beautiful Schloss Ort castle, the fine Gmunden ceramics, and the quaint Gmunden tramway. But Gmunden offers a lot of entertainment options all year round and is more than simply a charming town—it’s also a hive of festivals and events. You may take in the following Gmunden festivals:

• Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden: Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden is a July–September music, theater, literary, and art festival held in a number of locations in Gmunden and the Salzkammergut area. Together with seminars, workshops, and displays, the festival showcases both domestic and foreign artists. A Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra concert, a Mozart operatic staging of “The Magic Flute,” and a retrospective of painter Hans Staudacher are a few of the highlights of the 2023 edition.
• Silvesterrummel: This is a Gmunden major square New Year’s Eve festivity held on Rathausplatz. A market opens the event at 10 a.m., and at 10:30 a.m. a brass band called Stadtkapelle Gmunden performs. Gmunden rifle guard and the Gmunden fire brigade march in custom at 11:45 a.m. Midnight sees a fireworks show to cap off the occasion.
• Silvesterlauf: Running event Silvesterlauf is held on December 31st on the Esplanade, the lakeside promenade. Choose between a 5 km and a 10 km course, the event draws runners of all ages and skill levels. Nordic walking course and kids’ run are further aspects of the event. Raffle and award ceremony conclude the program, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
• Traunseeschifffahrt Winterfahrt: This is a November–March boat tour on the picturesque Lake Traunsee. An hourlong excursion is included, as is a hot drink. Offering a broad perspective of the lake and the neighboring mountains, the boat leaves the Rathausplatz at 2:00 p.m. Enjoying the Salzkammergut region’s winter landscape is made much easier with this excursion.
• Schau des Fotoclubs Gmunden: Photographic club members of Fotoclub Gmunden are exhibiting their work here. November to March sees the show in Gmunden’s Bürgerservicestelle. The photographers who depict the beauty and the history of Gmunden and beyond are showcasing their varied and artistic skills in this exhibition.
