Geography of Fugging
Nestled on a plateau in the northern Alps, Fugging lies around 500 meters above sea level. Situated 4 kilometers east of the Inn river, which forms the border between Austria and Germany, the settlement is 33 kilometers north of Salzburg. With four gates, each with traffic signs bearing the village’s name, the 1.6-kilometer-long settlement is easily identified. With its surrounding vast fields, lush meadows, and thriving woodlands, the community has a mostly rural and agricultural feel. Winters are chilly and summers are mild in this somewhat continental climate.
Situated in the ancient Innviertel, which was annexed by Austria from Bavaria in 1779, lies Fugging. Mainly Bavarian immigrants brought their language, customs, and religious beliefs to the region. The area’s gastronomic offerings are typified by its beer, cheese, and sausages.The area has a rich and varied natural and cultural legacy with many sites and monuments. Famous examples are the vast wooded region known for its varied flora and animals, the Kobernaußerwald. Apart from that, the area is the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, known historically as Braunau am Inn. Salzburg is also well-known for being connected to the great composer Mozart and the well-known musical film The Sound of Music.
A portion of some hiking and bike routes, such as the Salzachradweg, Römerradweg, and Innradweg, includes fugging. There are stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside, the river, and the mountains from the well designated, flat, and accessible trails.
