Things To Do In Finkenberg
In the Austrian Zillertal valley is the charming town of Finkenberg. Skiing, hiking, biking and other outdoor pursuits are common in this area. Finkenberg features a few interesting sights and attractions as well.
Granatkapelle Am Penken
The little red garnet stone church known as Granatkapelle Am Penken is among Finkenberg’s most unusual sights. Reached by contemporary cable car from the settlement of Mayrhofen, the chapel is situated at the summit of Penken mountain. An area farmer who gathered garnet stones from the neighboring mines constructed the chapel in 1988. With a wooden roof and a window shaped like a cross, the chapel is elegantly basic. Saints and angels are sculpted and painted throughout. The neighboring mountains and Zillertal valley are breathtakingly visible from the chapel. Meditation and prayer can also be done in peace there. Public use of the chapel is free of charge. Anyone that values spirituality and the natural world should not miss it.
Pepis Kinderland
If you’re taking kids, you really shouldn’t miss Pepis Kinderland, a vibrant and entertaining playground located on Penken mountain. The mascot of the playground, Pepi, is an amiable bear, after whom Pepis Kinderland got its name. Children of all ages may engage in climbing, sliding, bouncing, swinging, and other activities on the playground. Additionally included are a miniature golf course, a water play area, and a big bouncing cushion. Lovely alpine landscapes and clean air surround the playground. Easy to get to from the cable car station, Pepis Kinderland features a snack bar and restroom close by. Families may have a fantastic and adventurous day there.
Berliner Hohenweg
The roughly 70-kilometer Berliner Hohenweg is a demanding but worthwhile hiking route that passes over multiple peaks and glaciers for the most daring tourists. From Finkenberg, the route winds past the Schlegeis reservoir, the Olperer hut, the Furtschagl hut, the Berliner hut, the Greizer hut, the Kasseler hut, and the Gamshutte before coming to a conclusion in Mayrhofen. The Hohe Tauern National Park and the Zillertal Alps are spectacularly visible from the route. Being constructed by the German Alpine Club’s Berlin branch in the late 1800s, the trail also has historical value. Trail ideal for experienced hikers with appropriate equipment and physical condition. Generally speaking, depending on the weather and speed, the trek takes six to eight days to finish. The walkers can get food and lodging in a number of shelters along the route.
Skiing and Snowboarding
As Finkenberg is connected to the Zillertal 3000 ski region, one of the biggest and most varied in Austria, winter sports fans will find paradise. The ski area features more than 60 lifts and cable cars along with more than 200 kilometers of easy to demanding slopes. For added enjoyment and diversity, the ski area also features freeride zones, fun slopes, half-pipes, and snow parks. Offering even more choices and opportunities, the ski area is linked to the nearby resorts of Mayrhofen, Tux, and Lanersbach. From December to April, Finkenberg has a great ski season with typically good snow. Additionally serving the needs of skiers and snowboarders in Finkenberg are a number of ski schools, ski rentals, and ski shops. Whatever your level of experience, Finkenberg has something to fit your taste and ability.

- Biking: Finkenberg boasts a network of more than 800 kilometres of cycling paths with varying degrees of challenge and scenery. Either you can take a guided bike trip or ride your bike through the valley, the mountains, or the forests. One of the neighborhood bike stores also rents bikes and e-bikes.
- Paragliding: Try paragliding at Finkenberg if you’d want to feel the rush of flight. Enjoying the expansive vista and the crisp air, you may soar above the valley and the mountains. Either a professional instructor or you can fly tandem. Finkenberg is home to a number of paragliding schools and operators that give instruction and flights to both novice and experienced pilots.
- Swimming: June through September is when the public outdoor swimming pool in Finkenberg is open. The pool features a sunbathing lawn, a slide, a kids’ pool and a big swimming area. A snack bar and a loo are also available by the pool. Nestled next to the cable car station, the pool offers stunning views of the Penken mountain. On a scorching summer day, the pool is a terrific spot to unwind.
- Museums: Two museums in Finkenberg present the local history and culture. A local history museum, Heimatmuseum Finkenberg features a variety of items and exhibitions about Finkenberg’s mining, farming, and tourist industries. Situated in a 17th-century traditional farmhouse lies the museum. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. are when the museum is open, July through September. A nature park museum called Naturparkhaus Ginzling educates guests about the ecology, geology, flora, and fauna of the Zillertal Alps. A 3D cinema, multimedia stations, and interactive displays are features of the museum. May through October, the museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
