Braunau am Inn’s location has been essential in forming its culture and history. Situated as it is between Bavaria and Austria, the town is a vital center for communication and trade. History first records the town, then known as Prounaw, in 1120. It was given town privileges formally in 1260. Up to 1779, the village was a part of the Duchy of Bavaria. But as per the Treaty of Teschen, Austria thereafter seized control of it. Over the Napoleonic Wars, sovereignty of the area changed several times before it was included into the Austrian Empire in 1816. Braunau am Inn functioned as a major prisoner of war camp as well as a garrison town during World War I. It was briefly held by the US Army following World War II, and until 1955 it was a part of the American Zone of Occupation in Austria.
