Districts & Neighborhoods in Bischofshofen

With 10,570 residents as of 2021, Bischofshofen is a town in the Salzburg, Austrian state, St. Johann im Pongau region. It is in the Salzach river valley approximately 50 kilometers south of Salzburg, the state capital. The Hochgründeck, Tennen and Hochkönig massif mountains around it. Being on the Salzburg-Tyrol Railway line and the Tauern Autobahn, a major highway route that crosses the main Alps chain, Bischofshofen is a significant traffic crossroads.

Nine districts, or neighbourhoods, make up the town; each has a distinct past and personality.

Bischofshofen, the city (main town)

With 7,717 persons as of 2023, this is the biggest and most populated area in the town. It is located in the Salzach valley at the meeting point of the streams Mühlbach and Gainfeldbach. The market square, town hall and St. Maximilian’s church make up the historic heart of the town center. At Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze stadium, the town also holds the yearly Four Hills Tournament, a renowned ski jumping competition.

Mitterberghütten

This is a settlement near the mouth of the Mühlbach in the Salzach valley, south of the main town. Inhabitants as of 2023 number 1,340. Up to 1929, it was known as Außerfelden, after the ironworks that were located there between the 16th and the 19th centuries. The community is rural, with grasslands and farms.It has a sports facility and a train station as well.

Laideregg

West of the main town, at the base of the Hochkönig mountain, on the left bank of the Salzach, is this settlement. As of 2023, the population of it is 488. With views of the Hochkönig range and the Salzach river, the hamlet is renowned for its picturesque setting.There is a school, a fire station, and a chapel as well.

Gainfeld

Leading to the Hochkönig mountain is this valley close to Laideregg. Inhabitants number 84 (as of 2023). Because the valley has so many different paths and scenery, hikers and other nature enthusiasts frequent it. A cave, gorge, and waterfall are additional features of it.

Haidberg

This is the start of the Mühlbachtal valley, which to the south of Dienten crosses the Hochkönig. As of 2023, the population of it is 88. There are meadows and woods in the peaceful and remote valley. It has a guesthouse, a cemetery, and a church as well.

Buchberg

At the Hochgründeck mountain, on the right bank of the Salzach, is the principal settlement. Inhabitants as of 2023 number 409. With farms and orchards, the district is a rural and agricultural area. It has a museum, a school, and a church as well.

Kreuzberg

This is the hill that rises to Ennspongau between the Salzach and Fritztal valleys, northeast of the main town. Its population as of 2023 is 328. There are bike and hiking paths across the mountainous, forested neighborhood. Along with the ski lift, it contains a church and an observation tower.

Winkl

On the Hochgrüneckstock mountain, on the left side of the Fritztal valley. By 2023, there will be 68 residents. Alpine pastures and woodlands abound in this distant and tranquil location. Along with the cheese factory and hunting lodge, it contains a church.

Alpfahrt

With parts of the southern foot of the Tennengebirge mountain range, this is the left side of the Fritztal valley, near the valley’s end. By 2023, there will be 140 people living there. Rock formations, caverns, and waterfalls abound in this varied and picturesque landscape. It has a guesthouse, a school, and a church as well.
