History Of Bad Fischau-Brunn

Rich history going back to the Hallstatt civilization in the eighth and sixth centuries BC is present in the Bad Fischau-Brunn area. Roman road and Fischau springs usage are two indications of its importance during that time. In 1166 Fischau was founded as a market town and had a mint that Wiener Neustadt eventually eclipsed in importance. Once the Kristalltherme spa resort opened in 1872, mineral spring exploitation grew, and in 1900, additions and restorations were completed. 1929 brought the word “Bad” (spa town) to the name to denote its standing.

Bronze fittings from Celtic warrior tombs at an early to middle La Tène period burial site have been discovered by archaeologists. Before the Romans came during the time of Christ’s birth, the area was a part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and was subsequently included into the Pannonia province. The Romans were superseded by Germans in the fifth century, then by Avars and Slavs until Charlemagne’s invasion in the ninth. Under the administration of the Salzburg church, the region was then a part of Carantania and saw important building like a baptistery and hospice in the ninth century.

There is historical record of Fischau and Brunn from the twelfth century, when castles were probably constructed. Fischau was destroyed in 12th-century disputes between dukes of Austria and Styria. The area later experienced fighting with the Turks and Magyars. Prince Esterhazy built a Baroque mansion in the eighteenth century; it was damaged by an earthquake in 1768 but was restored by 1798.

Over time, the place name has changed spellings, including “Fiskaha” in 805 and “Uischere” in 1277. Its spa town standing was reflected in the 1929 addition of the name “Bad.” The present market town of Brunn a der Schneebergbahn was created in 1969 by the merger of Bad Fischau.
