Tossa de les Mussoles is a high mountain summit above the Estany de Cabana Sorda in the upper Vall d’Incles. OpenStreetMap locates the peak at approximately 42.6224° N, 1.6771° E and gives an elevation of 2,679 metres. Other route descriptions round it to 2,680 metres. The name also appears for a nearby locality, “la Tosa de les Mussoles,” so the summit and the general slope or place label should not be confused. The peak belongs to the high ridge between Andorra and France, close to Pic de la Coume d’Enfer, also called Pic d’Anrodat in Andorran sources.
The mountain is reached from the upper Vall d’Incles, a long glacial valley north of Canillo. The approach begins near the end of the road at Pont de la Baladosa and follows established paths toward Pleta de Manegor and Refugi de Cabana Sorda. The refuge is a free mountain shelter below the lake, while Estany de Cabana Sorda lies a short distance beyond it. Both are worthwhile destinations for hikers who do not wish to climb. The summit route leaves the marked or well-trodden valley path near the lake, climbs a steep grassy slope beside rocky ground and follows cairns toward the frontier ridge. From there, the crest leads to Tossa de les Mussoles.
The lake-and-refuge approach gives a clear starting point, but the summit section is a different class of outing. Recent specialist route descriptions report steep grass, cairned navigation and a ridge that continues toward Pic de la Coume d’Enfer. The route beyond Tossa includes a notch and two grade-II climbing moves before the next summit. That ridge traverse should be treated as a technical mountaineering option, not as the default descent from the peak. A walker planning only Tossa de les Mussoles should identify a safe return line in advance and avoid being drawn onward by the apparent continuity of the ridge.
One recent mapped outing links Tossa de les Mussoles with Pic de la Coume d’Enfer in a largely circular route from Pont de la Baladosa, ascending via Estany de Cabana Sorda and returning by Estany de l’Isla. Another route report combines Tossa with Pic d’Anrodat and Pic de Fontargent, describing an extensive high ridge and noting scrambling at the Anrodat summit. These itineraries show the mountain’s context, not guaranteed standard hiking routes. Distance, ascent and difficulty depend on the loop, the exact approach and whether neighbouring summits are included. The lake walk alone is not a reliable measure of the effort required to reach the crest.
The setting is especially striking because it brings together lakes, steep green slopes and the bare rock of the border ridge. Estany de Cabana Sorda sits in a natural bowl beneath the peaks, with the free refuge tucked near its shore. Higher up, the broad valley view gives way to exposed terrain and long sightlines toward the Incles and Ransol mountains. In clear conditions the frontier crest is a memorable viewpoint; in cloud, the sequence of ridges, notches and similar-looking high points can become confusing. Cairns may be hard to see when snow patches remain or when the slope is wet.
Tossa de les Mussoles is appropriate for experienced hikers with strong route-finding skills, sure footing on steep grass and comfort on exposed mountain terrain. Take a detailed topographic map and offline navigation, check the forecast for both Andorra and Ariège and leave time for a careful descent. The route leaves the main marked path, so phone navigation alone is not enough. Do not attempt the continuation to Pic d’Anrodat unless equipped and competent for grade-II scrambling and exposed downclimbing. Loose rock can endanger people below; keep spacing and avoid dislodging stones. If visibility deteriorates, return by the known ascent rather than trying to improvise across the ridge.
Season affects the route substantially. Snow-free summer conditions are normally the most suitable for a hike, but rain makes steep grass slick and storms expose the crest to lightning and wind. In winter and spring, snow, ice, cornices and avalanche conditions can make the approach a mountaineering objective. Specialist gear must match the conditions and the party must know how to use it. The Cabana Sorda refuge is not a staffed mountain hotel and does not eliminate the need for a self-sufficient plan; verify its state and capacity information separately, and never rely on an empty bed being available.
There are no daily opening hours at Tossa de les Mussoles. It is an open mountain summit without services. The lower Cabana Sorda refuge and lake are separate places with their own access and shelter conditions. No water source at the summit is assured; carry enough water or treat any water collected lower down. There are no shops or toilets on the mountain. Road access to Pont de la Baladosa, seasonal shuttle arrangements and parking restrictions can change, particularly during the summer period, so confirm the trailhead logistics before travelling.
For a gentler outing, walk to Refugi de Cabana Sorda and Estany de Cabana Sorda and return through Vall d’Incles. That route offers a beautiful high-valley experience without leaving the established path for the exposed climb. Strong mountain walkers who continue to Tossa de les Mussoles should treat it as a summit in its own right, separate from the nearby locality and from the more demanding traverse to Anrodat. Its appeal lies in the combination of lake basin and frontier ridge; a safe visit depends on knowing exactly where the walking path ends and the mountain route begins.
