Estany de Baix de Siscaró is a high mountain lake in the upper Vall d’Incles, reached by a marked hiking route from the end of the valley road. It is also called Estany de Siscaró or Lower Siscaró Lake and is one of several lakes and ponds in the Siscaró basin. Andorra Tourism describes the approach as a moderate hike beside the Siscaró River, climbing through mountain pine and dry-stone landscape before reaching the higher wetlands. The lake sits in a natural alpine environment without staffed visitor facilities at the shore. The route is a mountain outing rather than a short roadside stop.
The official hiking route begins at the end of the Vall d’Incles road, after the Pont de la Baladosa, at about 1,830 metres. The signed parking and picnic area is the starting point; the official page gives coordinates of approximately 42°36′7″N, 1°41′13″E. From there, the path climbs gently at first among dry-stone walls, black pine and rhododendron. At a junction hikers turn right, southeast, and ascend alongside the river toward the Siscaró ponds. A sign points toward Cabana del Siscaró, but the lake route continues around the ponds and follows a marked path toward the Basses dels Basers and then the main Siscaró lake. The official route sheet gives a distance of 3.58 kilometres, about 500 metres of ascent and 10 metres of descent, with a broad three-to-six-hour estimate and a moderate difficulty rating.
Route descriptions refer to several nearby waters, and the names are easy to confuse. The first ponds and wetlands are not all the same feature as Estany de Baix; the path continues around them before reaching the lake known for the greener tone of its water. The plant siscall grows in and around the lake and is associated with that colour. Smaller pools may be seasonal or partly dry, and water levels change with snowmelt and weather. Visitors should use the official mapped track and signs rather than assume that every visible pool is the named destination. The name “Estany de Baix” also distinguishes it from the upper Siscaró lakes and the separate Basses dels Basers.
The upper valley is reached from the CG-2 between Soldeu and El Tarter. After El Tarter and a service station, a signed turning leads into Vall d’Incles; the road continues for about three kilometres to the trailhead. Vehicle access and parking arrangements can change by season, especially during high visitor periods, so check current local rules before driving in. The official route description identifies a car park and picnic area at the end of the road, but it does not guarantee year-round parking availability. There is no regular service building at the lake itself. Carry water, food and any supplies required for the return trip.
Andorra Tourism recommends above-1,700-metre routes between late June and late September. It notes that the season may extend from May to October only if the weather and terrain are suitable. This is important for Siscaró, where snow, wet rock, stream crossings and muddy ground can remain after winter. Trail markings are useful, but cloud, rain or poor light can reduce visibility. The river-side climb is not a paved path, and hikers should wear grippy footwear and bring layers even if conditions in Soldeu are warm. Check a mountain forecast and turn around if the route becomes unsafe.
The landscape includes pine forest, open scree, wetland vegetation and views along the glacial valley. Andorra Tourism notes marmots may be seen on the scree and describes the lake and surrounding habitat as supporting fish, birds and mammals, including water pipits, alpine accentors, northern wheatears, squirrels and roe deer. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed; keep distance from animals and avoid feeding them. Wetland plants are vulnerable to trampling, so stay on the path where possible and do not pick flowers. Pack out rubbish and keep the shore as undisturbed as you found it.
Some itineraries continue beyond Estany de Baix to the refuge, higher lakes or longer routes through Siscaró toward Port Dret. Those extensions add distance and may involve more demanding terrain than the official approach to the lake. The refuge is a separate unstaffed mountain shelter, not a service counter or guaranteed source of supplies. Check its status and capacity before relying on it for an overnight stay. A map may show a network of intersecting paths, but the direct return to the trailhead should be planned before departure rather than improvised at a junction.
Estany de Baix de Siscaró suits hikers who are comfortable with several hours of uphill walking and changing alpine conditions. It is less suited to visitors seeking a short accessible stroll, guaranteed dry trail, or visitor facilities at the destination. The key planning details are the seasonal valley-road access, the marked trail junction, the route’s ascent and the distinction between the initial pools and the named lake. With those understood, the outing offers a substantial but clearly documented way to experience the high Vall d’Incles and its glacial waters.
