Nilo is the Canillo character in Andorra’s Tamarros family trail: a wooden figure set beside the Carretera de Montaup at Planells de Mereig. The tamarros belong to a playful nature-protection story created for families exploring Andorra’s parishes. Each character is associated with one parish, and Nilo represents Canillo. The stop combines a short walk to the figure with mountain views and a picnic area, making it an easy visit for families travelling between Canillo and the Roc del Quer viewpoint.

The official Tamarros material explains that the seven characters are imagined guardians of Andorra’s natural environment and forests. Their story invites children to help protect the landscape while they search for each figure. Nilo’s designated role is linked to Canillo, and the activity encourages families to engage with the outdoors rather than treat the visit as a ride-based attraction. A paper booklet or current digital map from a tourism office can help turn a single stop into a wider search across the country. Check the tourism office for the latest version before beginning a multi-parish collection.

Nilo is unusually accessible compared with some of the other Tamarros. The figure is beside the road on the Montaup side of Canillo, at Planells de Mereig, and recent visitor directions describe a nearby parking and picnic area followed by a short paved path. The official tourism map places the feature at approximately 42.563751, 1.574804. The route from a suitable parking space is brief, but visitors should still supervise children around the road and parking movement. Do not stop on the carriageway or block a passing place to take a photograph.

The setting gives the visit more than a quick character photo. The Montaup road climbs through an open mountain landscape, and nearby viewpoints look across the Canillo valley and surrounding ridges. The Roc del Quer viewpoint is a separate attraction with its own access path, hours, ticketing and weather-dependent operation. Nilo does not require a Roc del Quer ticket, and visiting Nilo does not provide entry to the suspended viewpoint platform. If you plan to see both, check the viewpoint’s current opening calendar and allow enough time for its walk and queue.

Families can also pair Nilo with the “On són els bolets” family trail in the Mereig area. The circular route was described at launch as approximately 3.7 kilometres with about 120 metres of elevation change, designed as an outdoor discovery walk for children. It begins close to the Nilo picnic area and uses interpretive elements to introduce local fungi and the natural surroundings. Current trail condition and any temporary closures should be checked locally, as a 2025 visitor reported that some mushroom-route elements appeared closed at that time. Do not assume every interpretive feature is operating just because the route remains on a map.

There are no fixed opening hours for the outdoor figure or picnic area in the reviewed sources. Access is generally a roadside outdoor stop, but weather, snow, maintenance, road conditions and temporary safety restrictions may affect the visit. In winter, mountain roads can be icy or snow-covered even when the village below is clear. Check current conditions, use winter equipment where required, and avoid lingering on a narrow shoulder. On sunny weekends and school holidays, parking can be busier because visitors combine Nilo with the viewpoint and family paths.

The picnic area is useful for a short rest, but it is not a staffed café or guaranteed visitor centre. Bring water and snacks, and take rubbish back with you. Facilities such as toilets, tables or shelters may have seasonal maintenance or availability limits; confirm on site rather than relying on an old review. The main purpose of the stop is the character, the outdoor setting and the family activity, not a full service complex. Keep the area tidy so that other visitors and local wildlife are not affected.

Nilo’s story works best when children are invited to observe the landscape and participate respectfully. The Tamarros materials frame the characters as protectors of nature; this is a family legend, not a claim about a real animal species. Follow any posted activity instructions, use only the designated portal if one is installed, and do not damage trees, move trail markers or leave food for wildlife. If collecting pinecones or small stones is part of the current official booklet activity, take only what the instructions ask and leave the wider habitat undisturbed.

The visit is simple to fit into a day in Canillo. Drive the Montaup road, park only in a signed space, walk the short path to Nilo, then continue toward Roc del Quer or return to the village. The nearby bridge and viewpoints are separate stops and may have different access rules, so check each one before committing to the route. A clear weather window makes the mountain setting most rewarding, while low cloud can hide the views. Nilo is a low-effort family stop, but safe parking, road awareness and respect for the mountain environment still matter.
