Estany de les Abelletes in Pas de la Casa, Andorra

Walk from Pas de la Casa to Estany de les Abelletes, an easy 808 m high-mountain route to a border lake shared by Andorra and France.

Estany de les Abelletes is a small high-mountain lake reached by an easy walking route from the Pas de la Casa sector of Grandvalira, right beside the Andorra–France frontier. The official trail is only about 808 metres long with roughly 120 metres of ascent, making it one of the more approachable mountain outings around Pas de la Casa. It is especially useful for travellers who want a genuine alpine walk without committing to a long summit route. The important limitation is altitude: the lake sits around 2,260 metres, so snow, wind and rapidly changing weather can make an otherwise straightforward path unsuitable outside the normal summer hiking period.

The route begins at the base of the Coll dels Isards chairlift in the Grandvalira–Pas de la Casa area. From there, the path follows the river corridor toward a water tank before continuing on a forest and mountain track that climbs on the right side of the watercourse toward the lake. Andorra’s tourism authority classifies the outing as easy and says the lake can be reached in less than an hour. That description is reasonable for walkers used to uneven ground, but it should not be read as a guarantee that the trail is simple in snow, ice or poor visibility.

The lake is interesting geographically because the frontier runs through the area: part lies in Andorra and part in France. It also sits at the head of the Pas de la Casa river basin, so the walk gives a compact lesson in how the high valleys around the resort drain and connect across national borders. Official visitor information notes that the lake is known among anglers for trout and brook trout. Fishing, however, is a regulated activity, so a sightseeing description should not be taken as permission to fish without checking current Andorran and cross-border rules.

For most visitors, the best reason to choose Abelletes is efficiency. Pas de la Casa is a busy ski and shopping resort, yet the walk quickly leaves the built-up setting for open mountain terrain. The route therefore works well as a summer or early-autumn half-day contrast to the resort streets. A family that only wants a short outdoor activity can walk to the lake, pause and return by the same line. More experienced hikers can use the surrounding terrain as a gateway to longer routes, but those extensions should be planned separately because the easy rating applies to the lake outing itself, not to every nearby ridge.

Season matters more than opening hours. Visit Andorra specifically recommends doing routes above 1,700 metres between the end of June and the end of September, with a possible extension from May into October only when weather and ground conditions allow. That advice is particularly relevant here because Pas de la Casa is one of the highest settlements in the country and retains winter conditions longer than the valley towns. On a September morning, for example, a clear start does not rule out cold wind or fast cloud later in the walk.

There is no staffed entrance gate to the lake and no published daily visitor timetable for the trail. For this reason, it is more accurate to treat access as weather- and terrain-dependent rather than claim that the route is verified as safely open 24 hours a day. In winter and during the ski season, the same terrain is part of an active mountain resort environment, and pedestrian access may interact with snow operations. In summer, check the local forecast and any Grandvalira notices before setting out.

A comfortable visit usually needs about 90 minutes to two hours for the round trip, including time at the lake, although fit walkers can move faster. The tourism authority’s route data give a walking time of under an hour to reach the lake. Take water, sun protection and a warm layer even when leaving Pas de la Casa in good conditions. Footwear with grip is preferable to smooth city shoes because the path is natural and can be wet or loose. The route is not a constructed accessible promenade, so wheelchair access and step-free movement to the lake should not be assumed.

Getting there is straightforward if you are already staying in Pas de la Casa. The start is in the Grandvalira sector above the town at the Coll dels Isards chairlift base, and the official route page supplies coordinates for the trailhead. Visitors arriving from elsewhere in Andorra should first navigate to Pas de la Casa and then follow current resort signage, because ski-area roads and parking arrangements can vary by season. The nearby sports centre in Pas de la Casa can be a useful bad-weather alternative if mountain conditions deteriorate.

Estany de les Abelletes is not the place to choose for a dramatic all-day expedition. Its strength is the opposite: a short, clearly defined high-altitude walk with a real border landscape and a lake at the end. It works best for visitors who respect the altitude, choose a stable-weather window and want to add a manageable mountain experience to a stay in Pas de la Casa. If conditions are poor, postpone rather than treating the easy grading as a reason to ignore the weather.
