Museu La Massana Còmic – Joan Pieras in La Massana, Andorra

Visit La Massana Còmic – Joan Pieras for original comic art, temporary exhibitions, a specialist collection and free admission in central La Massana.

Museu La Massana Còmic – Joan Pieras is a compact museum on Plaça de les Fontetes in La Massana devoted to comics, illustration and animation. It is managed by ARCA, the Andorran Association of Comic, Illustration and Animation, and combines original artwork with a specialist bibliographic collection, temporary exhibitions, film-related material and workshops. It will appeal most to readers, illustrators and visitors who enjoy graphic storytelling rather than to travellers expecting a broad history museum. The museum is easy to fit into a town-centre visit, admission is free, and its scale makes it a useful cultural stop between outdoor activities in La Massana.

The institution’s purpose is preservation as much as display. The Government of Andorra’s museum network says the collection includes an important graphic and bibliographic archive, and the museum uses it to support exhibitions and activities about comics, illustration and animation. Since 2019 it has maintained a consultation space with more than a thousand comic books covering different periods and genres, along with VHS and DVD films and books about film art. That research-oriented element distinguishes it from a temporary gallery: even when the headline exhibition changes, there is a deeper collection behind the public programme.

Original drawings are central to the experience. The museum began its activity with an exhibition of work by illustrator Antonio Bernal and has subsequently shown creators including Alfonso Font, Ana Miralles, Jan, Joan Mundet, Carlos Ezquerra, Jordi Planellas and Paco Roca. The exact temporary exhibition changes, so travellers should check the museum website rather than arrive for an artist whose show has already finished. In 2026, for example, La Massana tourism promoted a Maren exhibition during the winter and a later exhibition by illustrator Carlös, demonstrating that the programme continues to turn over rather than functioning as a fixed permanent display only.

The museum has a permanent display of originals, temporary exhibition space, a bibliographic consultation room and a film-projection area. Workshops and activities are also part of its remit. That mix makes the experience dependent on timing: a visitor who arrives during a strong temporary exhibition can spend considerably longer than someone making a quick circuit of the permanent material. For most independent visitors, roughly 45 to 75 minutes is a practical estimate. Comic specialists who want to use the bibliographic collection or attend an activity should plan more time and contact the museum in advance if they need specific access.

Location is one of the museum’s advantages. Plaça de les Fontetes is in the centre of La Massana, close to the parish’s everyday services and transport connections, so the museum does not require mountain logistics. It pairs naturally with other cultural sites in the parish, especially Casa Rull in Sispony and Rossell Forge. Those sites interpret rural society and industrial heritage, while La Massana Còmic focuses on a modern popular art form. Together they show that La Massana’s cultural offer is broader than skiing, cycling and hiking, which dominate many visitors’ first impressions of the parish.

The official La Massana Còmic website currently presents museum hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–14:00 and 15:00–19:00. A 2026 La Massana tourism listing for a museum exhibition used the same schedule. However, the Government of Andorra’s Museus portal currently lists a more limited pattern for Tuesday to Thursday, with full morning-and-afternoon hours only on Friday and Saturday. Because these two official sources conflict, this guide uses the museum’s own published timetable in the daily sidebar but recommends checking directly before a time-sensitive visit. Sunday and Monday are shown as closed.

Admission is listed as free by the government museum network. The same source says the museum is adapted for people with limited mobility, an important practical advantage compared with many historic buildings and mountain attractions in the region. The museum also provides a consultation room, projection room, permanent and temporary exhibitions and comic-related workshops. There is no need to treat the free admission as a reason to rush through: the value depends on reading labels, looking closely at line work and production techniques, and, when available, comparing preparatory or black-and-white material with finished colour pages.

The museum is named for Joan Pieras and is closely linked with the La Massana Còmic convention, which ARCA also organises. This relationship between museum and event helps explain the institution’s emphasis on living creators and changing exhibitions. It is not simply an archive of old magazines. The programme can move from classic illustration to contemporary satirical work, film imagery or author-focused displays, and the surrounding activities may include talks, screenings and workshops. Visitors interested in a particular artist should therefore treat the museum calendar as part of their trip planning.

For families, the museum is most rewarding when children already enjoy drawing, animation or graphic novels, although the visual nature of the displays can also work for mixed-language groups. For serious comic readers, the main limitation is size: this is a specialised small museum, not a giant international comics centre. That is also its strength. It offers a focused local institution with direct links to Andorra’s active comics association, manageable visit length and regular temporary programming. Check the current exhibition and verify the day’s hours, then combine it with central La Massana or another nearby museum rather than planning an entire day around the building alone.
