Estany Negre is a high-mountain lake in the Comapedrosa Natural Park, in La Massana parish. Its dark appearance gives the Catalan name, “Black Lake,” and its position on the approach to Andorra’s highest summit makes it a landmark on demanding routes above Arinsal. The lake lies beyond the guarded Comapedrosa refuge and is reached on the GR11 and associated park paths. It is a natural mountain destination without a road, staffed entrance or public opening schedule. The route from the valley climbs through a series of distinct landscapes, so the lake should be treated as one point in a substantial hike rather than a short visit.

Visit La Massana includes Estany Negre on its official route to Alt de Comapedrosa and on the Pic de Baiau itinerary. The summit route is listed at 13.8 kilometres, 1,986 metres of elevation change and approximately 11 hours 43 minutes, and is classed difficult. The Pic de Baiau route is listed at 13.7 kilometres, 1,888 metres and about 11 hours 18 minutes, also difficult. These are full-route figures, not lake-only distances or times. Both routes begin at the Comapedrosa park parking area and pass the guarded refuge before reaching the high lakes.

The approach to Estany Negre follows the marked GR11, with white-and-red trail marks and yellow-dot communal waymarks on connecting sections. On the Alt de Comapedrosa itinerary, hikers leave the refuge and cross an open, relatively level section before a sustained ascent toward the lake. The route then skirts the lake and continues over scree toward the summit. Visit La Massana warns that snow can remain near the lake and recommends carrying crampons when conditions require them. Beyond the water, the summit route becomes steep and technically demanding. The Pic de Baiau route also passes Estany de Comapedrosa before reaching Estany Negre, then continues toward Port de Baiau and an unmarked, broken ridge section.

This sequence is important for navigation. Estany Negre is not Estany de les Truites beside the refuge, and it is not the Estany de Comapedrosa that appears earlier on the Pic de Baiau route. It is also different from the multiple Basses de l’Estany Negre lower or adjacent to route branches, which appear in some descriptions near the summit path. Names in the upper basin are similar, and a waypoint label can shift between maps. Follow the official route line and park signs rather than navigating by name alone, especially where snow covers trail marks or scree obscures the path.

The lake sits in an exposed alpine environment with little shelter. Visit La Massana cautions that summer heat and solar radiation can be strong at altitude and that the technical summit sections require care. Weather may change quickly, and lingering snow can make the approach icy even when the valley is warm. Bring waterproof and insulating layers, sun protection, food, sufficient water, a map and a charged navigation device. Check the current mountain forecast and trail information before leaving. If visibility drops or snow makes the route uncertain, return along the known trail rather than continuing to the summit or crossing an unfamiliar slope.

The guarded Comapedrosa refuge is a useful service point lower on the approach, but it operates separately from the lake. It offers accommodation and high-mountain food when open and when reservations are available; check directly before relying on a meal, water source or overnight stay. There are no facilities at Estany Negre itself. No fixed opening hours apply to the lake. Access is governed by daylight, weather, snow, route condition and any temporary park restrictions. A refuge’s open status does not imply that the high lake or summit route is safe or fully passable.

Estany Negre is part of a protected mountain ecosystem. Stay on established paths, avoid shortcutting over fragile vegetation and keep a respectful distance from wildlife. Do not enter the water, leave waste, feed animals or collect natural material. The lake’s shoreline can be sensitive and route surfaces are vulnerable to erosion. The park announced updated lake-protection measures and cycling-access regulation in 2026, so check its current rules before planning a ride or approaching the shore by bicycle. Follow posted signs and do not assume that walking permissions apply to every mode of access.

The lake is most appropriate for experienced hikers who are already prepared for a long day in exposed terrain and who can assess snow and weather. Decide in advance whether Estany Negre is the turnaround point or part of a summit route. The full itineraries to Alt de Comapedrosa and Pic de Baiau involve additional steep or unmarked terrain; do not treat the lake as a casual halfway stop without checking the remaining distance and daylight. Start early, carry the right equipment and turn back when conditions warrant it. Reaching the shore offers a striking view into the high basin, but safety depends on respecting the demanding route.
