Estany del Port Dret is a high-altitude lake in the upper Pla de l’Estany basin of the Comapedrosa Natural Park, in La Massana parish. At about 2,560 metres, it sits below Pic del Pla de l’Estany and looks across the upper valley toward the surrounding Pyrenean peaks. The lake is remote and exposed, reached only as part of a demanding mountain outing. It is not the Port Dret pass itself, and it should not be confused with the Estanys de Montmantell or the Estanys Forcats, which occupy neighbouring branches of the high basin.

Visit La Massana features the lake in its “Estany Port Dret and Pic del Pla de l’Estany” route. The published itinerary is 13.1 kilometres, with 2,187 metres of accumulated elevation change and a listed duration of 12 hours and 23 minutes. It is classified as difficult. Those statistics describe the complete route from the Comapedrosa parking area and return, not a lake-only outing. The route begins by following the approach toward the Pla de l’Estany refuge, then continues through the Cabana de Montmantell and the Estanys de Montmantell before gaining the Pic del Pla de l’Estany Sud. From the summit, the route descends toward Port Dret and the lake.

The official route description warns that the upper path becomes more alpine and steeper after the Montmantell lakes. The trail may be hard to follow after those lakes, and the ascent to Pic del Pla de l’Estany is unmarked. The descent from the peak to Estany del Port Dret is steep and made of loose earth that can slip underfoot. The route source explicitly says hikers need experience moving through high-mountain terrain. This is not a suitable destination for an inexperienced walker, a short family outing or anyone relying on a casual map pin as proof of a safe path to the shore.

After reaching the lake, the published itinerary returns by the same route, although an alternate descent from the peak is described. The local tourism page notes that upon returning to Pla de l’Estany, hikers may choose the forest track toward the Comapedrosa parking area for a somewhat faster finish. Route options change the total time and terrain, so use the linked GPX and technical information to plan the exact line. Do not apply the full 13.1-kilometre statistics to the lake alone or assume the entire route is marked continuously. The area includes rivers, ponds and scree, and the trail becomes especially demanding above the refuge.

The lake’s appeal is its high, open setting and broad view over Pla de l’Estany, Arinsal and La Massana valley. Visit La Massana describes the views from this area among the best in the country. At this elevation, however, the landscape also brings exposure to wind, strong sun, sudden cloud and rapidly changing weather. The route authority warns that summer heat and solar radiation can be strong on open slopes. Carry sun protection, ample water, food, warm layers, waterproof clothing, a map and a charged navigation device. Start early enough for the full route and leave a generous margin for the descent.

There is no road or lift to the lake, and the final approach should not be improvised from a distant viewpoint. Check recent local conditions and use the official track before starting. A refuge lower in the valley can be a useful waypoint, but it does not replace the navigation and equipment needed for the exposed upper route.

There are no staffed facilities at the lake and no fixed public opening hours. The Pla de l’Estany refuge is a separate, unguarded shelter lower on the approach, while the guarded Comapedrosa refuge is on another route line. Their facilities or availability do not make the lake route safer or guarantee services at the shore. Access depends on daylight, weather, snow cover, route condition and any park notices. Hard snow can remain in the high pass area into early summer, and loose terrain can become more hazardous after rain or when wet grass reduces grip. Check current conditions before committing to the upper section.

The surrounding mountain ecosystem is part of a protected communal natural park. Stay on established routes, avoid shortcutting across fragile vegetation and do not disturb wildlife. The upper basin contains interconnected streams and lakes, and water quality or availability should not be assumed without treatment. Do not swim or collect natural material. Pack out all rubbish and respect any signs or temporary closures. If visibility deteriorates, retreat along a known route rather than continuing toward the summit or attempting an unfamiliar descent to the lake.

Estany del Port Dret suits experienced hikers who are comfortable with long days, substantial elevation, unmarked high sections and steep loose slopes. It is most responsibly approached through the current local route description with a clear decision point before the Pic del Pla de l’Estany. If conditions, fitness or visibility are not suitable, turn back before descending toward the lake. A visit offers a striking high-mountain perspective, but the journey requires preparation well beyond an ordinary valley walk. Treat route difficulty and weather as central parts of the destination, not as minor details.
