Estany de les Truites is a high-mountain lake in the Comapedrosa valley, in La Massana parish. The water lies beside the guarded Comapedrosa refuge at roughly 2,260 metres, on the marked approach from the Arinsal sector. The lake is one of the park’s six glacial lake centres, although unlike several natural tarns it has an artificial dam. Its name means “Trout Lake,” and official park material notes that brown trout can be observed in the water. This is a remote alpine destination reached on foot, not a roadside lake or an urban picnic stop.

The clearest visitor route is the official Comapedrosa Refuge and Estany de les Truites itinerary published by Visit La Massana. It is a linear 7.4-kilometre route with a listed total duration of about 6 hours and 40 minutes and 1,157 metres of elevation change. These figures describe the full approach and return between the Comapedrosa parking area and the refuge/lake, not a lakeside circuit. The trail follows the GR11 and communal paths marked with yellow dots. The local tourism office classifies the outing as moderate, but its long duration and substantial ascent require good fitness and a full day’s preparation.

From the Comapedrosa parking area, the route first follows the road toward the Riu Pollós picnic area, where a water source is available at the start. It then climbs by path and forest track toward the refuge. The first part is sheltered by woodland; higher up, the route opens into terrain without tree cover. At the Collet de Comapedrosa, hikers turn left to gain the refuge. From there, a relatively flat section reaches the lake’s shore. The descent normally follows the same route, with an option to use a forest path for the final section rather than returning along the track. Check the official route sheet and GPX before setting off, because the complete outing is much longer than the short level path between the refuge and water.

The lake and refuge are separate places even though they occupy the same high basin. The Comapedrosa refuge is staffed and offers accommodation and mountain food service; its booking, season and opening arrangements are independent of access to the lake. A visit to the lake does not require assuming that the refuge has a bed or meal available. If you plan to stay overnight or eat there, check current availability and contact the refuge directly. The shoreline itself has no visitor reception, ticket office or regular public timetable. There are no fixed opening hours for the lake, and access depends on daylight, weather, trail condition and park notices.

The water, dam and surrounding slopes provide a clear view of the glacial character of the upper valley. The refuge’s presence makes the shore an accessible pause on a serious hike, but it does not remove mountain hazards. Visit La Massana cautions that the upper route is exposed to strong sun and heat in summer. Carry enough water, sun protection and food, and bring warm and waterproof layers even when the valley begins in mild weather. Cloud, wind, rain, snow or ice can develop quickly above the tree line. Check the forecast and trail conditions before departure, and turn back if visibility or footing becomes poor.

Wildlife and vegetation around the lake are part of the protected park. The official biodiversity itinerary describes Estany de les Truites as one of the glacial lake centres and notes the artificial dam; park fauna material identifies trout and amphibians in the aquatic environment. Keep to established paths, avoid disturbing wildlife and do not enter the water or collect plants and stones. Leave no rubbish, and do not feed the fish. The shore can be sensitive to trampling, especially where wet ground and meadow vegetation meet the water. Respect park signs and any temporary restrictions intended to protect the habitat.

The lake is also a useful geographic reference for longer routes, but hikers should not confuse it with Bassa de les Granotes, Estany Negre or the Estanys Forcats. Bassa de les Granotes is higher along the Portella de Sanfons direction, while Estany Negre belongs to a different basin and route branch. The refuge-to-lake outing is the simplest official approach to this particular waterbody; the higher crossings are longer and more technical. If combining places, calculate the full distance and ascent from a current map rather than adding only the short distance between names on a map.

Estany de les Truites is best for hikers prepared for a substantial approach who want to see a high lake beside a staffed mountain refuge. The main practical decisions are whether to complete the full out-and-back in one day, whether to reserve the refuge, and whether current weather and trail conditions allow the ascent. Start early, carry navigation and suitable mountain equipment, and leave enough daylight for the descent. The lake rewards the effort with a close view of water, dam and alpine terrain, but the route should be treated as a demanding mountain outing rather than a casual walk.
