Refugi de Siscaró is a small, unguarded mountain shelter at 2,145 metres in the upper Vall d’Incles. It sits on the eastern side of the valley’s high hiking network and can serve as a pause or overnight stop for walkers travelling between Juclà, Cabana Sorda, Port Dret and other refuges. The hut is part of Andorra’s free-refuge system, not a staffed hostel: there is no guardian, reservation service, restaurant or guaranteed bedding. The Federation of Andorran Mountaineering lists it as open year-round.

The equipment is basic. The current Government refuge list describes a stove and water nearby; FAM’s listing reports a fireplace and water at the hut. Neither source promises potable water, so carry water or a treatment method and do not rely on a source being available in every season. The shelter is intended to provide refuge and simple sleeping space, not a fully equipped base. Bring your own food, sleeping bag, warm clothing, headlamp, navigation and rubbish bags. Check the stove and surrounding conditions before use, follow any local fire restrictions and never leave a flame unattended.

There is a small discrepancy in published capacity. The live FAM listing gives ten beds, while the Government’s current refuge catalogue says eleven. Treat the refuge as a compact shelter, not as guaranteed accommodation, and plan for the possibility that it is occupied. There is no booking system. In busy summer periods, hikers on long-distance routes may arrive from several directions. If the interior is full or unsafe, have enough equipment and time to continue to another refuge or a lower route; do not make a high-mountain itinerary depend on a single empty bunk.

The main approach starts at the end of the road through Vall d’Incles, near the Baladosa bridge. Visit Andorra describes the hike toward Estany de Baix de Siscaró as 3.58 kilometres with about 500 metres of ascent and moderate difficulty. The route rises through dry-stone walls, mountain pine and alpine vegetation, then reaches a junction where the path to Cabana del Siscaró branches away from the lake circuit. The official lake description focuses on continuing around the lakes, so hikers bound for the refuge must follow the signed hut branch rather than assume that the lake loop passes directly through the building.

The path from the valley floor is a sustained mountain climb. Its moderate rating should not be read as effortless: elevation gain, wet ground, snow and changing visibility can make the walk demanding. Visit Andorra recommends high routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September, with a possible shoulder-season extension only when the weather and terrain allow. Check the current forecast, snow conditions and trail markings before starting. In winter and spring, the refuge’s year-round status does not make the approach safe or ensure that the entrance will be easy to reach.

Siscaró is valuable as a junction on longer traverses. The Government’s refuge network map places it along the GRP, the GR 11 and the GR 11.10, while route information describes connections toward Juclà and the French border. It can be used on stages that link Juclà, Port Dret, the Vall d’Incles and other shelters. These routes cross high passes and open terrain, and some sections are rocky or exposed. Use a current topographic map and check the route’s elevation profile; do not confuse a hut-to-hut line on a map with a simple valley walk.

The wider setting includes the Siscaró lakes, streams and alpine slopes. Estany de Baix de Siscaró lies at higher elevation than the hut, and the lake route and hut spur are related but separate objectives. The basin is known for clear water, rocky ground and alpine plant life. Andorra’s official route description notes the presence of trout in the lakes and identifies mountain wildlife such as marmots as possible sightings; wildlife is never guaranteed. Stay on established paths, avoid disturbing animals and do not feed them.

There is no road or vehicle access to the refuge. The valley road’s terminal area provides the hiking start, but parking and seasonal access rules can change. Confirm current arrangements for driving or shuttle services in Vall d’Incles before travelling, and allow extra time if you have to walk from a lower parking point. From the trailhead, the refuge is reached on foot only, with no supplies available along the climb. Carry everything you need for the full outing.

Use the refuge as a shared public shelter: leave it cleaner than you found it, take all waste back down, and preserve fuel and facilities for other hikers. Respect quiet conditions at night and avoid occupying more space than needed. Before planning an overnight, verify current hut condition and trail status with the Government or FAM refuge information. Refugi de Siscaró is most useful to prepared walkers who understand that an open hut is a basic safety resource, not a staffed service or a guaranteed bed.
