Pic dels Llops is a 2,843-metre summit in Encamp parish, set among the high ridges between the Ensagents valley and the Pessons basin. Despite the word “pic,” its summit is described by hikers as a broad, plateau-like high point rather than a narrow pinnacle. The name is sometimes associated with Coma dels Llops, the valley basin below, but the summit is a distinct destination. Nearby Alt del Griu, Pic d’Ensagents, Pic dels Pessons and Pic de Ríbuls are separate peaks that may appear in the same panoramic view or in longer traverses.

The mountain’s location places it among some of the most striking glacial terrain in Encamp. To one side are the lakes and slopes of the Ensagents basin; to the other, the high ridge above the Pessons lakes and the cirque’s granite walls. The summit offers wide views in several directions and is less directly tied to resort infrastructure than the lower Grau Roig points. It nevertheless sits within a high mountain environment where weather, snow and navigation determine whether the outing is sensible.

One documented approach begins at Els Cortals d’Encamp and climbs through the Ensagents valley toward the basin and the upper ridges. A published circular route describes sections where yellow circles are present but the path itself becomes faint, particularly around small lakes and open slopes. From Collada dels Pessons, the route continues among large blocks toward the crests of Gargantillar, then reaches Pic dels Llops. The final ridge is reported as straightforward in dry conditions, with the possibility of avoiding the most exposed crest by traversing its southern side. The descent and approach choices should be studied on a map rather than improvised from the summit.

Another way to understand the mountain is as a high point above Coma dels Llops, approached from nearby valleys and cols. These routes can be more demanding than the well-marked trail to Refugi d’Ensagents. The lower paths lead to lakes and shelter, while the summit extensions cross open alpine terrain where cairns and occasional waymarks replace a continuous maintained trail. Do not confuse the official access to the refuge or the lakes with a fully waymarked summit path. Carry precise navigation and keep a clear plan for returning to the valley.

Route distances and ascent vary with the chosen trailhead and whether the outing includes Collada dels Pessons, the Gargantillar crests or neighboring summits. The route from Cortals through Ensagents is a substantial day with steady climbing from the road, followed by a long upper mountain section. Linking Pic dels Llops with Alt del Griu or Pic dels Pessons adds exposure and requires careful time management. Start early, add generous margins for route-finding and pauses, and avoid committing to a multi-peak traverse if cloud is building or the group is moving slowly.

The summit area is a broad rocky plateau with scattered boulders and alpine grass. Its open position creates a fine 360-degree panorama over the Andorran mountains and the glacial valleys of Ensagents and Pessons. There is no staffed refuge or visitor structure at the top. A nearby shelter lower in the valley can be a useful landmark but should not be assumed to be equipped or attended. There is no guaranteed source of drinkable water on the summit; carry enough for the full route and treat any water collected from lakes or streams.

Although the usual summer route is not described as requiring technical climbing, the outing remains physically demanding. High elevation, sustained ascent, loose terrain, faint trails and possible exposure make it unsuitable for visitors without mountain experience or navigation skills. Keep away from steep northern faces and do not descend an unknown slope because it appears shorter on a screen. If visibility drops, retrace the known ridge and return by the ascent line. The plateau can make exact summit identification less intuitive, so use coordinates and contours rather than relying only on a cairn.

Late spring through early autumn is generally the hiking period, provided the upper slopes are clear and the forecast is stable. Snow can linger near the cols and on shaded aspects, hiding tracks and changing the difficulty. In winter, avalanche assessment and appropriate equipment are essential; the high basins can be wind-loaded and the terrain is not a casual snow walk. Check weather, snowpack, trail condition and road access to Cortals before leaving. Thunderstorms are particularly dangerous on the open ridge, where there is little quick shelter.

Pic dels Llops has no entrance fee or fixed opening hours; it is open mountain terrain. The summit has no services, and access to the lower road or trailhead may be affected by seasonal conditions. Respect livestock and wildlife, avoid damaging wetland vegetation around the small lakes, and take all rubbish with you. A shorter alternative is to visit the Ensagents lakes or refuge and return on the marked lower route. Continuing to the summit should be a deliberate decision based on time, weather, fitness and comfort with navigation in high terrain.
