Pic de Serra-seca is a summit of approximately 2,775–2,777 metres in Encamp parish, on the ridge system above Grau Roig and the Colells basin. It appears under the spelling Serra Seca in many route accounts and is also identified in some itineraries as Pic de la Portella de Joan Antoni. The naming is not entirely consistent: the same sources may use “Portella de Joan Antoni” for the nearby saddle as well as for the crest summit. Visitors should therefore rely on the summit coordinate and elevation, not just a short label in a track title.
The peak is part of a long high-level circuit connecting Pic de Montmalús, Pic dels Colells, Pic de la Portella dels Colells and the upper ridges toward Engaït. These are separate named points, and the route crosses several cols between them. Pic de Serra-seca is not the 2,773-metre Pic de la Portella dels Colells, nor is it the lower pass that provides a route back toward the lakes. The broader setting includes the glacial cirques of Pessons and Colells, whose lakes and granite walls make this one of the most distinctive mountain landscapes in southeastern Andorra.
The most commonly documented approach begins at Grau Roig, from the Cubil parking area. Walk toward the Montmalús basin using the established route, then continue along the crest as the trail circuits the Colells. Rutes Pirineus describes a loop that reaches Montmalús first and follows the ridge toward the Portella de Joan Antoni, from where the Serra-seca summit is included in some variants. A separate mountain-club outing describes a border circuit from Grau Roig via the GR7 toward Engaït, reaching Serra Seca at around 2,775 metres. These accounts demonstrate that the summit lies on a network of connected routes, not on a single universally waymarked path.
Conditions on the ridge determine the character of the outing. In clear summer weather, the crest is generally a mountain walk with occasional use of hands for balance, but several sections are airy and exposed. Some reports describe small rock pinnacles near the summit and uneven traverses where the path crosses steep slopes. Wet rock, snow or ice raises the difficulty markedly. Avoid the crest if anyone in the group is uncomfortable with exposure or if the ground is damp; a lower route around the lakes is a safer alternative.
The route from Grau Roig climbs through open high-country terrain, where the contrast between the sharper northern slopes and gentler grassy southern sides is clear. On the way, hikers may pass Montmalús lake, the Colells cirque and a succession of cols with wide views. This richness can tempt walkers to extend the day repeatedly. Set a firm turnaround time and remember that a ridge itinerary accumulates distance and height even when each individual summit appears modest. An out-and-back to the lakes is not equivalent to a circuit over Serra-seca.
Pic de Serra-seca offers a broad panorama over the southeastern Andorran mountains and toward the Cerdanya. The surrounding ridge opens views across the Pessons lakes, the Montmalús basin and the frontier peaks. There is no constructed viewpoint, staffed refuge or service at the summit itself. The nearby Montmalús refuge is a separate facility lower on the route, and its availability or condition should be verified rather than assumed. Water sources are not reliable for untreated drinking.
Plan with a detailed topographic map and an offline navigation backup. Carry water, food, an insulating layer, waterproof shell, sun protection and a headlamp. Mobile coverage is not guaranteed. The exact route labels can vary, and cairns may lead to adjacent knolls or subsidiary points rather than the intended summit. Check the elevation profile and position of the 2,775–2,777 m high point before departure. If fog reduces visibility, retrace the ascent line instead of descending into the steep lake basin or toward an unfamiliar valley.
Late spring, summer and early autumn are generally the best periods for hiking, once the ridge is free of snow. The usual high-altitude window is from late June to September, although conditions vary year to year. Snow can remain on shaded slopes and saddles into summer; in winter, this terrain belongs to mountaineering and ski touring. Assess avalanche danger and avoid active or closed resort pistes. Check weather, trail notes, parking arrangements and resort operations before travelling to Grau Roig.
Pic de Serra-seca is open mountain terrain with no entry fee or fixed summit hours. Access depends on weather, the legal path network and seasonal ski operations. Visitors should follow route markings where present, keep away from machinery and closed slopes, protect fragile alpine vegetation, and carry all waste back down. Those seeking a less demanding visit can walk toward the Montmalús or Colells lakes and turn around before the exposed ridge. The summit is most rewarding for hikers who understand its ambiguous naming, prepare for a long day and are comfortable on airy mountain ground.
