Pic de la Portella dels Colells is a 2,773-metre summit in Encamp parish, positioned above the Colells basin and the high routes around Montmalús. It is a named peak, not the mountain pass “Portella” implied by part of its name. Several nearby places use similar Colells and Portella wording: Pic dels Colells is a separate summit, as is Pic de la Portella de Joan Antoni, and a pass also carries the Colells name. Keep the full name when planning or describing a visit to avoid mixing these destinations.
The peak forms part of the rocky ridge system between Grau Roig and the Montmalús lakes. It stands among alpine hollows and granite slopes, with the Colells lakes and Circ dels Pessons contributing to the landscape below. Its high position offers views across the southeastern Andorran ranges and, on a clear day, toward the Cerdanya and border peaks. The summit itself is natural terrain without a built platform, staffed service or guaranteed summit marker.
A practical approach begins from the Grau Roig ski area, using the route toward Montmalús and the Colells basin. Rutes Pirineus describes a circular itinerary from Grau Roig that visits Pic de Montmalús and the Colells cirque, with the Pic de la Portella dels Colells reached along the broader ridge network. Another line uses paths toward Portella de Joan Antoni or the Colells lakes, then climbs the summit slope. These itineraries involve mountain paths, cairns and sections where the trail is less distinct. The route should be checked against a current map because the named point is not simply at the first pass encountered on the ascent.
The most important distinction is between the summit and nearby cols. A “portella” is a pass or small mountain crossing in Pyrenean place names, while “pic” denotes the summit. The Pic de la Portella dels Colells is listed at 2,773 metres and stands above the pass network. Do not stop at a saddle and assume you have reached the summit; confirm the coordinates and elevation profile. Likewise, do not substitute Pic dels Colells or Pic de la Portella de Joan Antoni, which have separate summit identities and can appear on the same day’s route.
From Grau Roig, the walk begins in resort infrastructure but quickly enters high mountain terrain. In summer, routes may follow established paths toward lakes and passes before leaving them for open slopes. The final ascent can involve loose rock, grass and uneven ground; cairns help in clear weather but are not a substitute for navigation. The summit is not known to have a fully waymarked trail from the road. Use an offline topographic map, take note of the departure point from the marked path, and decide on a return route before climbing.
Route distances and timing vary according to which ridge or lakes are included. The Montmalús–Colells outing is a longer circular hike rather than a short summit spur. Adding Portella dels Colells may extend time and elevation, while traversing toward other named peaks can make the outing substantially more demanding. Do not use the duration for a lakeside walk as the time required for the summit. Start early and allow for navigation, pauses and weather changes; if uncertain, remain on the established lake route and leave the summit for another day.
The open crest has little shade and can be exposed to wind. Summer sun is intense at altitude, and cloud can roll in quickly from neighboring valleys. Snow may persist on north-facing slopes into early summer and return in autumn. In winter, the area is influenced by ski-resort activity and steep snow slopes; walking across pistes may be unsafe or restricted. Any winter itinerary should be treated as ski mountaineering or winter climbing, with avalanche assessment and suitable skills, rather than a normal hike.
There is no water tap, restaurant or staffed refuge at the summit. Facilities at Grau Roig or around Estany Primer are separate and operate seasonally. Carry sufficient food and water, warm and waterproof layers, sun protection, first aid and a headlamp. Water from streams and lakes should be treated. Respect fragile wetland margins, avoid disturbing wildlife and livestock, and do not dislodge rocks above other walkers. A shorter alternative is to explore the Colells or Pessons lakes on established paths and enjoy the mountain setting without committing to the exposed upper ridge.
Pic de la Portella dels Colells is open mountain terrain without an entry fee or fixed opening hours. Access depends on weather, seasonal snow and resort operations. Confirm road, parking and piste conditions before starting from Grau Roig, and follow any temporary closures. A lift or piste shown on a Grandvalira map does not establish pedestrian permission or a safe summer line. The summit rewards careful navigation and a clear distinction between its several similarly named neighbors; visitors who prepare accordingly can enjoy a quieter high point above one of Andorra’s most distinctive lake districts.
