Pic Baix del Cubil is a summit of about 2,705 metres in Encamp parish, overlooking the Grau Roig side of the Pessons basin. It is the lower of two named Cubil peaks and should not be confused with Pic Alt del Cubil, which rises to about 2,833 metres farther along the mountain group. Grandvalira maps also show a separate “Pic Cubil” label at a lower resort elevation; that point is not the same as this natural summit. The distinction matters in route planning because the names are similar while the terrain and access differ.

The mountain stands near the entrance to the Circ dels Pessons, where a chain of lakes draws many summer walkers. The lower ski area and lifts occupy nearby slopes, but the summit itself is natural high ground rather than a constructed observation platform. From the ridge, views open over Grau Roig, the lower Pessons lakes and surrounding Encamp peaks. Nearby Alt del Cubil, Pic d’Ensagents, Pic dels Pessons and Montmalús are separate summits, even when route maps show them as part of one broad skyline.

Pic Baix del Cubil is approached from the Grau Roig sector, but route choice depends strongly on whether the visit is on foot in summer or within the ski area in winter. Summer lines climb from the Cubil parking area toward the lower Pessons basin and then leave the main path to gain the summit slopes. Some routes skirt the peak before continuing toward Alt del Cubil or the upper ridge. A map and a specific track are essential: the official Visit Andorra Pessons route is a lake-and-pass itinerary, not a dedicated maintained summit path for Pic Baix del Cubil.

The lower Pessons trail is a useful way to enter the landscape. Visit Andorra describes a difficult 5.95-kilometre route with 707 metres of ascent from the Cubil parking area, passing Estany Primer and several lakes toward Collada de Pessons. Those published figures end at the pass and do not describe an ascent to Pic Baix del Cubil. If leaving the signed lake route to reach the summit, hikers enter rougher ground where paths may be faint, cairns intermittent and loose stones common. Keep track of the junction where you leave the main route and be prepared to return by the same line.

Winter visitors should take particular care. The area is part of Grandvalira’s managed ski terrain, and resort maps show pistes, lifts and mountain points together. A piste map is not a hiking map or a guarantee of pedestrian access. Stay clear of operating lifts, groomers and closed slopes, and follow resort rules. Snow can obscure rocks and summer tracks, while steep slopes may be avalanche-prone. Do not attempt a winter ascent unless you understand the snowpack, have appropriate equipment and can select a safe line. Resort activity nearby does not reduce backcountry risk.

The mountain’s modest height relative to neighboring summits does not make it a trivial walk. The approach involves high-altitude terrain, and the summit slopes may be loose or exposed. Weather can change rapidly: cloud can hide the surrounding ridges, wind chill can be severe, and thunderstorms make open slopes dangerous. Carry a detailed offline map, compass or GPS, warm and waterproof clothing, food, water, sun protection and a headlamp. Mobile coverage should not be assumed. If conditions deteriorate, descend to the marked lake route rather than traversing toward an unfamiliar peak.

The Pessons basin offers easier options for visitors whose goal is scenery rather than a summit. Estany Primer and the chain of lakes provide a substantial day out, and the restaurant/refuge by the first lake may operate seasonally. Confirm current opening and shuttle information directly; it is a separate business, not a service at Pic Baix del Cubil. There is no summit shelter, drinking-water tap or staffed facility on the peak. Lake water and streams require treatment if used for drinking.

Late June through September is generally the most reliable period for high-altitude hiking, subject to weather and ground conditions. Snow can persist later on shaded slopes, and early autumn storms may arrive quickly. Check forecasts, trail notices, parking and current Grandvalira operations before departure. The area may have seasonal road or vehicle arrangements, particularly around the Cubil access point. Respect wetland edges, avoid disturbing marmots and other wildlife, remain on marked paths when possible and carry out all rubbish.

Pic Baix del Cubil is natural terrain without an entrance fee or fixed opening hours. Access is governed by weather, season, public routes and resort operations. Treat it as an optional summit extension rather than an advertised, waymarked attraction. Visitors should decide at the trailhead whether they have enough time and navigation ability for the ascent. Those wanting an easier route can enjoy the signed lakes instead; those climbing should be self-sufficient and should not mistake the lower ski-area label for the summit itself.
