Estany Primer de Pessons is the first major lake encountered on the route into the Pessons cirque from Grau Roig. At about 2,300 metres in Encamp parish, it forms the lower gateway to a chain of mountain lakes that continues past Forcat, Rodó, Meligar, les Fonts and Cap dels Pessons. A restaurant/refuge stands beside the water, giving the lake a more accessible feel than the upper basins, but reaching it still involves a mountain approach from the Cubil car park. The setting combines open water, forest edges and a broad view toward the surrounding Pessons peaks.
The official approach starts at Cubil car park in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector. From there a forest track heads west to the lake. Visit Andorra’s technical sheet gives the waypoint as approximately 1.58 kilometres from the start, at 2,300 metres, with about 197 metres of ascent and an estimated 35 minutes. Those figures describe the approach to the lake, not a full return itinerary. The official Pessons circuit continues farther along the GRP and GR7, so visitors should decide before leaving whether they are making the lake their destination or carrying on into the higher cirque.
At Estany Primer, the route becomes a marked mountain trail. The official description follows the GRP south from the lake, then joins the GR7 around its southern side. From there the path reaches Estany Forcat, followed by Rodó, Meligar and les Fonts, before climbing past Cap dels Pessons toward Collada dels Pessons. The full published route to the pass is 5.95 kilometres with 707 metres of ascent and a three-to-six-hour estimate; it is classed as difficult. Those figures are not the statistics for the short approach to Primer and should not be used as a simple lakeside walk estimate.
Estany Primer is a practical place to pause because the nearby restaurant/refuge provides a recognizable landmark and may offer food or a terrace when open. It is a separate business, not a public facility guaranteed to operate year-round. Its service times, reservations and seasonal schedule should be checked directly before relying on it. The lake itself has no admission gate or staffed visitor centre, and facilities at the restaurant do not mean that every trail beyond the shore is easy or accessible. People visiting only the lower lake can enjoy the setting without committing to the demanding upper route.
The lake also serves as a useful orientation point. It is the first basin in the Pessons sequence, and the route from Cubil arrives along a forest track before the scenery opens into the cirque. The official trail describes following the GRP onward from here, while later sections cross granite scree and gain height toward the pass. Hikers who continue should follow the marked path rather than choose shortcuts across the water’s edge or resort slopes. The transition from a broad track to rocky trail is a good moment to check footwear, weather, water and the time remaining in the day.
Access to the trailhead is by road to the Grau Roig sector, then parking at Cubil. Visit Andorra’s technical route locates the start at roughly 42°31′54″N, 1°41′51″E. Private motor vehicles should not be assumed to have permission to drive up the forest track; the official route materials describe walking from the car park, and any seasonal transfer is a separate service. Parking availability, resort operations and the restaurant’s opening can change with the season. Confirm current information locally rather than relying on a past visit or a directory listing.
Although the approach to Estany Primer is shorter than the entire circuit, this is still a high-altitude location. Weather can shift quickly, and strong sun, wind, cold or storms can affect even the lower part of the cirque. Visit Andorra recommends routes above 1,700 metres from late June through late September, with a possible extension from May to October only when conditions permit. Carry water, appropriate layers and sun protection. For children or anyone unused to altitude, keep the outing flexible and return along the known track if the weather or energy level changes.
The natural lake has no fixed visiting hours. Exact Google and Tripadvisor searches did not surface a lake timetable, and the OSM water feature has no hours field. Access is governed by daylight, weather, trail conditions and any current area restrictions. The adjacent restaurant/refuge has its own hours and seasonal operation; do not apply them to the lake or assume the business will be open. If a meal, toilet or shelter is essential to the plan, verify the operator’s current service information and carry an alternative.
Estany Primer works for visitors seeking a first look at the Pessons landscape as well as for hikers beginning a longer route. It offers a natural turnaround point after the forest-track approach, with a nearby business that can make the stop more comfortable when operating. The upper lakes are a separate commitment: the official route becomes difficult, gains substantial height and continues to a mountain pass. Choose the day’s objective to match fitness, weather and daylight. Whether pausing at the water or continuing toward the cirque, leave the shore clean and give other walkers room around the lakeside path.
