Estany del Cap dels Pessons is the final named lake on the marked ascent through the Pessons cirque above Grau Roig. The official route sheet places it at about 2,605 metres, high above the resort sector in Encamp parish. It lies beneath the rugged slopes of the cirque and forms the upper end of a sequence that begins at Estany Primer and passes Forcat, Rodó, Meligar and les Fonts. The lake is a mountain waypoint, not a developed attraction: the appeal is the changing chain of water, granite and open alpine terrain on the walk in.
The official approach starts at the Cubil car park in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector. A forest track leads west to Estany Primer, where a restaurant/refuge sits beside the water. The route then follows the GRP and joins the GR7, marked with white and red paint. The trail passes Estany Forcat and Estany Rodó, climbs gently toward Meligar, and crosses granite scree to Estany de les Fonts. From there the gradient steepens. The path climbs above the final lake, zigzags toward Collada dels Pessons and opens to views across the cirque and surrounding peaks.
Visit Andorra classifies the route as difficult and publishes a distance of 5.95 kilometres, 707 metres of ascent and an estimated three to six hours. Its technical sheet lists the lake at 5.1 kilometres into the route, at approximately 2,605 metres, with the pass beyond it at 5.95 kilometres and 2,810 metres. The route statistics apply to the full itinerary to the pass, not a separate lake-only walk. The official technical sheet says the return follows the same way, so plan for the additional descent and do not mistake the one-way route distance for the whole outing.
The climb has a clear progression. Around Estany Primer, there is a broad track and a nearby seasonal restaurant; farther uphill, the path becomes a marked mountain trail. At Rodó, the official description notes the first broad view over the lakes. Meligar and les Fonts are encountered among rocky slopes, where granite blocks and scree call for secure footing. Above les Fonts the route climbs more directly, and the Cap dels Pessons lake marks the final water feature before the sustained zigzags to the pass. The terrain is exposed enough that clouds and wind can change the experience quickly.
The route’s waypoints are useful for planning, but they do not make the walk easy. The published 707 metres of ascent accumulate over a short distance, and the final climb to the pass is steep. Hikers should wear footwear suited to uneven rock, carry water and food, and allow a margin for rests and navigation. The route is marked, but snow or poor visibility can obscure paint and trail edges. Anyone who is tiring at the lake should consider turning back rather than continuing automatically to the pass; there is no obligation to complete the entire itinerary.
Access to the trailhead is by road to Grau Roig and the Cubil car park. Visit Andorra gives the start at about 42°31′54″N, 1°41′51″E. The route sheet notes that the initial track from Cubil leads to Estany Primer, and other official route descriptions indicate that a seasonal 4×4 transfer may sometimes be organized by specialist operators; private vehicles should not be assumed to have access up the track. Verify parking, resort access and any transport operation locally before setting out. The restaurant beside Estany Primer has its own business hours and is not a source for the lake’s visiting schedule.
Official safety guidance recommends mountain routes above 1,700 metres from late June to late September. The season may extend from May to October only if weather and terrain allow. Snowfields can persist around the pass, while storms, strong wind, cold and poor visibility can develop even during summer. Check the high-altitude forecast, start early and set a turnaround time that leaves daylight for the return. Avoid exposed slopes during thunderstorms and do not rely on mobile coverage for navigation or emergency communication.
Estany del Cap dels Pessons has no fixed visitor opening hours or staffed entry point. Exact Google and Tripadvisor searches did not surface a natural-lake schedule, and the mapped water feature has no hours field. Access depends on trail conditions, daylight and mountain safety. The restaurant/refuge at Estany Primer operates separately, and its hours may vary by season. Carry enough provisions for the full outing rather than assuming that food or shelter will be available at either lake.
This lake suits hikers who want to follow the full Pessons sequence and are prepared for a difficult high-mountain climb. For a shorter outing, the lower lakes near Estany Primer can provide a rewarding landscape without committing to the pass. Those continuing upward reach a viewpoint that places the succession of lakes in context, but should treat the pass as a substantial extension rather than a trivial extra few minutes. On the descent, retrace the marked route carefully and preserve energy for the uneven ground below the lake.
