Estany de les Fonts is one of the named high-mountain lakes in the Pessons cirque above Grau Roig, in Encamp parish. It sits within a chain of glacial lakes and smaller pools framed by granite slopes, alpine grassland and the surrounding peaks. The name means “Lake of the Springs,” and the lake is encountered on the established route that links the Pessons basins rather than as an isolated roadside stop. Its setting makes it a natural pause on a substantial mountain walk, with the landscape opening toward the upper cirque as the trail climbs.
The official approach begins at the Cubil car park in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector. A forest track leads west to Estany Primer, where a mountain restaurant/refuge stands beside the water. From there, the described route follows the GRP south, then joins the white-and-red-marked GR7 around the south side of Estany Primer. The path continues past Estany Rodó and Estany del Meligar before crossing granite scree to Estany de les Fonts. Beyond the lake, it climbs more directly toward Estany del Cap dels Pessons and then zigzags to the Pessons pass.
Visit Andorra classifies the whole route as difficult and gives it as 5.95 kilometres, 707 metres of ascent and three to six hours. These figures cover the published itinerary to the pass, not a separate out-and-back to Estany de les Fonts and not necessarily a return to Cubil. The trail page does not provide a lake-only distance, so it is better to plan from the full route and your intended return than to estimate a short walk from the total. If you turn around at the lake, allow time for retracing the same mountain path and check how the route connects back to the starting point.
The sequence of lakes is one of the defining features of the walk. Estany Primer is the broad starting landmark, followed by smaller bodies of water tucked into the cirque. At Estany Rodó, the official route notes a first view of the collection of lakes together; after the gentler climb to Meligar, the terrain becomes rockier on the approach to les Fonts. Granite slabs and scree replace some of the softer grassy sections, so footwear with reliable grip is useful. The lake is part of a larger landscape rather than a developed attraction, and no visitor facilities are documented at its shore.
Beyond Estany de les Fonts, the route continues to the final named lake, Estany del Cap dels Pessons. The switchbacks toward the pass gain height quickly, with broad views back across the water-filled cirque. The trail’s difficulty reflects the cumulative ascent and high-mountain terrain, even though much of the way is established and marked. It should not be treated as a casual stroll merely because the initial approach begins at a ski resort. Hikers should be prepared for uneven stone, changing weather and slower movement at altitude.
The trailhead is at Cubil car park, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira. Visit Andorra locates it at approximately 42°31′54″N, 1°41′51″E. Seasonal resort operations may affect nearby transport or facilities, but the route description does not promise that a lift or restaurant will be operating on a particular date. Check local access and parking information before departure. The restaurant by Estany Primer is a separate business with its own service schedule; its hours should not be assumed to apply to the trail or to Estany de les Fonts.
The high-altitude season requires care. Visit Andorra recommends routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September, with a possible extension from May to October only when weather and terrain conditions allow. Snow, ice and unstable footing can linger after lowland conditions improve. A forecast for the valley town is not a substitute for checking conditions in the cirque. Carry water, food, layers, sun protection and navigation, and set a turnaround time that leaves sufficient daylight for the descent. If clouds obscure the route or storms approach, descend while the marked trail remains easy to follow.
Estany de les Fonts has no fixed visitor opening hours or entrance gate. Exact Google and Tripadvisor searches did not surface a schedule for this natural lake, and the mapped water feature has no hours field. Access is therefore a matter of trail conditions, daylight and mountain safety, not a daily timetable. Nearby restaurant or refuge hours are separate and seasonal. Visitors relying on food or shelter at Estany Primer should verify those services directly and carry enough provisions in case they are closed.
This lake is a good objective for hikers who want to experience several Pessons lakes in a single mountain outing and are comfortable with a difficult route. The walk rewards steady pacing: the chain of water, granite and open slopes changes as the trail climbs from the first lake to the pass. Less experienced walkers can enjoy lower viewpoints around Estany Primer without committing to the full ascent, then return by a route they understand. For anyone continuing above les Fonts, the pass is not just a photo stop; it is a high point that requires a clear descent plan and a realistic assessment of weather and energy.
