Estany de Coma Estremera is a high-mountain lake in Encamp’s Montmalús area, reached from the Grau Roig side by a marked mountain route that climbs toward the Montmalús pass. It is not the better-known Estany de Montmalús, and the names should not be treated as interchangeable: the Coma Estremera lake lies on the approach through a different basin and appears as a waypoint on a route toward the Madriu valley and Refugi de l’Illa. Its appeal is the remote setting and link between the Grau Roig trails and the upper valley, but this is a demanding mountain outing rather than a quick roadside stop.

The lake sits in a broad high basin shaped by glacial and alpine processes. The surrounding terrain is open and rocky, with slopes rising toward the pass and higher ridges. The official Portella Blanca route map places Coma Estremera Lake at about 2,390 metres. Treat this as an approximate route-map elevation rather than a precise shoreline survey. Conditions can also change the visible shape of the water and shore during the season.

The clearest approach documented by the authority responsible for the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley starts in the Grau Roig/Pessons area. From the first Pessons lake, hikers can choose a route toward the Montmalús pass; the access page identifies the Coma Estremera lake on that path and directs walkers to a right-hand fork a short distance beyond the pass toward Refugi de l’Illa. This establishes a real connection to the trail network, but it does not make the outing easy. The approach climbs into exposed terrain and requires navigation, suitable footwear and the ability to assess mountain weather.

The route has a wider purpose than visiting this one lake. It links the Grau Roig sector with the high Madriu valley and the staffed Illa refuge. The authority’s route description is useful for identifying direction and trail junctions, while a historical Andorran mountain guide describes the Montmalús outing from Grau Roig as a long circuit with substantial climbing. Do not transfer that older route’s full distance or ascent automatically to a lake-only visit: the itinerary continues across the pass and includes other destinations. Plan a route using a current topographic map and confirm the intended return path before setting out.

Grau Roig is the practical starting area for many visitors, with vehicle access along the CG-2 and parking near the ski sector. The trail continues on foot; motor vehicles are not allowed in the protected Madriu valley. Winter ski infrastructure and summer hiking access are different systems, and a ski area operating nearby does not guarantee that the walking route is safe or accessible. Snow can remain at high elevations well after conditions improve in town. The responsible authority recommends planning high-altitude routes for the warmer season and checking terrain and weather conditions before departure.

The lake is part of a wider network of mountain waters and passes. The nearby Montmalús lakes, the Pessons cirque and the Estany de l’Illa route are related landscape features, but each has its own name, basin and approach. The Illa route crosses the Pessons lakes and reaches Portella dels Pessons before descending toward the Illa refuge; the Montmalús approach to Coma Estremera follows a different line. Visitors should not assume that a line between two labels on a small-scale map is an easy connecting path. At this altitude, a short distance can involve steep slopes, loose stone or snow patches.

There are no staffed visitor facilities at Estany de Coma Estremera itself. The closest reliable services are in Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa or the staffed refuge farther along the route, depending on the direction taken and seasonal opening. Carry food, water, warm layers, navigation and a charged phone; do not rely on a restaurant, shelter or lift being open when returning. Fishing and other activities may be subject to separate regulations, and no permission should be inferred from the presence of a lake. Check current rules with the responsible Andorran authority.

Because no facility operates at the lake, there are no fixed daily admission hours. That does not mean access is safe at every hour: darkness, storms, wind, snow and rapidly changing visibility can make the route hazardous. Begin early enough to return in daylight, check forecasts for the pass rather than only the valley, and turn back if conditions deteriorate. The route is better suited to experienced hikers comfortable with high mountain paths than to visitors seeking an easy family walk.

Estany de Coma Estremera is most rewarding as part of a carefully planned mountain route linking Grau Roig with Montmalús and the Madriu valley. It is not a destination with a car park at the shore or a short, universally easy trail. Before leaving, distinguish it from Estany de Montmalús, verify the current route and snow conditions, estimate the full return distance rather than just the lake approach, and check any refuge reservations if continuing to Refugi de l’Illa. Those preparations make the lake’s remote position understandable without understating the effort involved.
