Pic d’Ensagents is a 2,857-metre summit in Encamp parish, rising above the lakes and refuge that share the Ensagents name. The plain map label “Ensagents” can refer to the mountain, but it is also used for the surrounding valley, the Estanys d’Ensagents, Refugi d’Ensagents and the river. Here it means the summit only. The peak belongs to the high ridge country between the Ensagents basin and the Pessons sector, with the taller Alt del Griu standing nearby. The two summits are separate, even though several walking itineraries combine them into a single demanding day.
The peak’s character is defined by its position above a glacial basin. Below the summit lie the Ensagents lakes, set among granite, alpine grass and steep slopes. The ridge gives broad views over Encamp and the surrounding Andorran highlands. On a clear day, the contrast between the lake-filled cirque and the rough crest is especially striking. The area feels remote once above the trees, despite being connected to a road-accessed trailhead in the Cortals d’Encamp sector.
The most practical Andorran approach begins at kilometre 6.2 on the CS-220, near Borda del Tresà in Els Cortals d’Encamp. The official route described by Visit Andorra heads through the Campeà forest toward Refugi d’Ensagents. The marked path follows the stream and gains height through black-pine woodland before emerging into more open terrain. From the refuge, continue toward the lakes and then plan the summit ascent separately: the standard lower trail is not a fully waymarked summit route, and the upper mountain requires attention to cairns, terrain and navigation.
One summit itinerary climbs from the lakes toward the ridge and the peak, sometimes combining it with Alt del Griu or Pic de l’Aspra. Independent route descriptions indicate that cairns and occasional paint marks help on the upper slopes, but some sections are rough and may require using hands for balance. The terrain is not a maintained path in the same sense as the lower valley approach. Avoid copying a GPS track blindly; traces may cross loose blocks or pass over difficult short steps. In poor visibility, the ridge can be confusing, and it is easy to drift toward a neighboring summit or descend into a different basin.
Expect a strenuous full-day outing from the road. The official Alt del Griu circular route in the same basin is about 10.2 kilometres with roughly 1,015 metres of ascent and 5 hours 10 minutes of moving time, but that circuit does not represent every Ensagents summit itinerary. Adding Pic d’Ensagents, linking to Alt del Griu, or using a different descent changes both distance and difficulty. Treat route statistics as examples only, add time for navigation and rests, and return by a line you can confidently retrace. Check the map before leaving the refuge rather than deciding at the lakeside without a plan.
The refuge provides a useful landmark and emergency shelter, but it is unguarded rather than a staffed mountain hotel. Do not count on food, bedding, electricity or a reliable water supply. Water is present in the stream and basin, but should be treated before drinking. At the lakes, stay on durable paths where possible and avoid disturbing the fragile wetland margins. The upper slopes have loose stones and alpine vegetation; step carefully and do not dislodge rocks above other hikers.
The summit itself is a natural rocky high point without visitor facilities, a ticket office or an official viewing platform. Its value comes from the mountain setting: the succession of lakes below, the granite ridges around the basin and the panorama across Encamp’s peaks. The neighboring Alt del Griu is higher and more widely described as an expansive viewpoint, while Pic de l’Aspra is another separate top sometimes included in a circular route. Visitors should decide whether their objective is the lake basin, the refuge, this summit or a multi-peak traverse; these are different levels of commitment, not equivalent short walks.
Late spring, summer and early autumn are generally the most suitable periods for a hiking ascent, depending on snow and weather. Snow can remain on shaded slopes after the lower forest is clear. In winter or spring conditions, the basin and upper slopes may present avalanche risk, hidden holes and hard snow where a slip has serious consequences. Check the forecast and current mountain conditions, and do not attempt the crest without appropriate equipment and experience. Thunderstorms and strong winds are particularly hazardous on exposed ground. Carry waterproof and insulating layers, map and compass/GPS, headlamp, food, water, first-aid supplies and sun protection.
Pic d’Ensagents has no fixed opening hours or access fee; it is open mountain terrain. Road access and parking near the trailhead can be seasonal or subject to local arrangements, so confirm conditions before driving. The refuge and lake route do not imply that the summit approach is open or maintained. Use legal paths, respect any closures and avoid ski pistes or machinery if resort operations are active nearby. For a less exposed outing, stop at the refuge or lakes and return on the marked approach. Those continuing to the peak should be self-sufficient, protect the fragile high-country environment and carry all waste back to the valley.
