Alt del Griu rises above the Ensagents valley in Encamp parish and is one of Andorra’s major high summits. Sources give approximately 2,874 to 2,879 metres, reflecting differences in mapping and summit identification across the blocky crest. The mountain occupies an excellent position between the cirque of Ensagents and the Pessons group. From its top, the view opens across much of Andorra’s southeastern high country, with the lakes below providing a striking foreground and the ridges toward Grau Roig, Envalira and Soldeu filling the wider horizon.

The name is sometimes written Alt de Griu, but the familiar Catalan form is Alt del Griu. It is not the same summit as Pic d’Ensagents, which rises to the north-east, or Pic de l’Aspra, a separate lower top on the return ridge in some circular itineraries. Pic Alt del Cubil and Pic dels Pessons are also distinct. Hikers may see all these names in one track or panorama because the summits form a connected mountain landscape; that does not make them interchangeable destinations.

One well-documented approach begins at kilometre 6.2 on the CS-220 road through Els Cortals d’Encamp, near Borda del Tresà. The official Visit Andorra route climbs through the Campeà forest toward Refugi d’Ensagents, following yellow waymarks on the lower path. It then continues past the refuge and the Ensagents lakes to Collada d’Entinyola before turning toward the summit. This route gives a gradual transition from forest to alpine basin and open crest, and it is the clearest choice for visitors who want a named, mapped approach rather than an improvised ridge traverse.

The official description makes an important distinction: the lower approach is marked, but the summit continuation is more mountain-like. Beyond the refuge and lakes, follow the available painted marks and cairns, then use the topographic line toward Collada d’Entinyola and the high ground. The last section crosses grass, broken granite and scattered blocks; route traces can fade, and the summit rocks require attention to footing. Do not assume that a continuous, obvious path reaches every point on the crest. In cloud, the subtle terrain can make it difficult to distinguish the intended ascent from neighboring ridges.

The popular circular outing combines the lakes and Alt del Griu with Pic de l’Aspra and the Serra de les Pedrusques. Rutes Pirineus describes a circuit of roughly 10.2 kilometres, around 1,015 metres of accumulated ascent and 5 hours 10 minutes of moving time. The final crest and the descent through Pedrusques are explicitly described as requiring mountain experience and good orientation. These figures are planning references, not a guarantee: stops, snow, route-finding and individual pace can substantially lengthen the day. Visitors who do not know the area may prefer to return by the ascent route rather than attempt the more confusing descent through the forest.

Expect a strenuous outing despite the absence of sustained technical climbing in dry summer conditions. The altitude, accumulated vertical gain, loose stones and remote character demand sound fitness and a full mountain kit. Carry a detailed offline map, compass or GPS, water, food, waterproof and insulating layers, sun protection and a headlamp. There are streams lower in the valley and a non-guarded refuge, but water availability and quality are not assured, and the summit has no services. Tell someone your route and expected return time, especially if taking the circular line.

The Ensagents basin is among the most rewarding parts of the approach. The route passes through black-pine woodland and rhododendron before emerging into a glacial landscape of lakes, granite and open alpine meadows. The refuge provides a simple shelter stop, not a staffed lodge or a restaurant. Around the lakes, keep to durable ground and avoid trampling wet vegetation. On the upper slopes, the terrain feels broad and open, with the summit’s stony crown rising above flowered grass and scattered boulders. The panorama includes the cirques and ridgelines of Encamp, while the valley’s quieter character contrasts with the nearby ski infrastructure at Grau Roig.

Late spring through autumn is the usual hiking season, but snow often persists on shaded slopes well into early summer. Visit Andorra’s route information and specialist descriptions point to late spring, summer and autumn as suitable seasons when conditions allow. Before departure, check the forecast, snow cover and official route updates. Thunderstorms, high winds and low cloud can make exposed ridges unsafe. In winter, this is not a casual walking route: snow changes the terrain, may conceal cairns and can create avalanche exposure on slopes and gullies. Use suitable winter equipment and only proceed with the relevant mountain and avalanche skills.

Alt del Griu is open mountain terrain without an entrance fee or fixed summit opening hours. Road access to the trailhead, seasonal parking and any forestry or snow conditions are separate practical matters; verify them before driving to Els Cortals. The refuge is unstaffed, and the summit has no lift or visitor facility. Ski-area maps may show nearby terrain, but resort operations do not mean the mountain route is open or safe in winter. Respect livestock, wildlife and private property, follow marked paths where they exist and take all rubbish back down. For an easier day, the Ensagents lakes and refuge are worthwhile objectives on their own; continuing to the summit should be an informed choice based on time, weather and experience.
