Refugi Riu dels Orris is a free, unguarded mountain shelter at 2,230 metres beside the Riu dels Orris, in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror cultural landscape. It lies near the Pla de l’Ingla and Cabana de Setut, on the high route system between Fontverd, Perafita and the upper Madriu. The hut is a simple overnight refuge for hikers and a useful waypoint on longer traverses; it is not a staffed lodge, a cabin rental or a reservable accommodation service.

Official sources disagree on its usable capacity. The Government lists six beds, while FAM lists ten; the Madriu-Perafita-Claror authority presents a range of six to ten. For planning, use six and assume no bed is guaranteed. The Government describes the refuge as open all year, equipped with a fireplace, table, benches and a porch for firewood, with water nearby. FAM also lists a wood porch and nearby water. The valley authority confirms the shelter and its proximity to the river. Water availability can change with season and weather, and river water is not guaranteed potable; bring a treatment method. Fuel may not be stocked, and there is no attendant or reservation system. Carry sleeping gear, food, warm layers and a light.

The refuge is reached by mountain trail, commonly as part of an approach from Escaldes-Engordany through the Madriu valley or as a stage on the GRP and Coronallacs networks. The valley authority places it on the bank of the Riu dels Orris, southeast of the Pla de l’Ingla peak, and near Cabana de Setut. The Government’s Coronallacs information describes a route entering the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley on the GR 7, passing through Entremesaigües, Bordes de Ràmio, Fontverd and the Farga before climbing toward the upper routes. From the hut, paths connect toward Perafita and the higher passes. These are mountain itineraries with meaningful elevation and remote sections; do not use straight-line map distance as a substitute for route time or difficulty.

One of the distinctive features of the surrounding area is the historical pastoral landscape. The word “orris” refers to stone enclosures used to manage sheep and process milk. The official Madriu itinerary for the shepherd cabins describes a network of traditional structures and routes, and notes the opportunity to use the Riu dels Orris refuge to split the itinerary over two days. The shelter stands close to these remains, but the refuge and the old pastoral structures are not the same feature. Treat fragile walls and structures respectfully, avoid entering unsafe buildings and keep to the marked route. The valley’s value comes from the relationship between its natural setting and centuries of land use.

The upper basin combines streamside terrain, open mountain slopes and glacial landforms. The Riu dels Orris is a nearby landmark and potential water source, while the surrounding meadows and ridges lead toward Pla de l’Ingla and routes crossing into the Perafita and Madriu valleys. Cabana de Setut, a separate communal hut, is close by; it is not an alternative official refuge and should not be counted as guaranteed backup accommodation. Refugi de Fontverd is lower down the Madriu, while Refugi de Perafita sits in a separate side valley. A through-route can connect all of them, but the sequence involves high terrain and should be planned as a full outing.

Use the exact name and coordinates to distinguish this refuge from Cabana de Setut and from individual orris. Government lists 42°29′06″N, 1°38′26″E; FAM shows the same position and 2,230-metre elevation. The valley authority uses the name Refugi del Riu dels Orris and locates it by the river. The official map of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror area marks both shelters and pastoral features, helping separate a modern mountain refuge from a shepherd cabin or stone enclosure.

There are no daily opening hours because the refuge is unguarded. The Government lists it as open all year, but winter access may be affected by snow, ice, low visibility and avalanche conditions on connecting slopes. High routes are generally best attempted in summer; Visit Andorra’s guidance recommends late June to late September above 1,700 metres, with shoulder-season walking only when conditions permit. Check the forecast and local advisories, carry offline maps, and tell someone your itinerary. Camping in the protected valley is subject to authorization rules; the valley authority explains when permission is required. Do not assume that pitching a tent beside the hut is automatically allowed.

Refugi Riu dels Orris is most useful to prepared hikers making a multi-day journey through the Madriu-Perafita-Claror landscape or a longer route around the upper valleys. It offers basic shelter in a memorable setting associated with pastoral history, but its small capacity, absence of staff and uncertain water supply require independence. Keep the area clean, respect historic structures and plan an alternative if the shelter is occupied. Confirm each junction and keep a margin for weather delays.

There is no attendant or reservation system, and official listings do not describe a food service. Bring your own sleeping gear, meals, lighting and warm layers, and do not depend on the fireplace being fueled on arrival. Because the refuge is small, treat an available bed as unguaranteed and decide in advance where you can continue if the shelter is full.
