Refugi de Perafita is a free, unguarded mountain shelter at 2,200 metres in the Vall de Perafita, inside the Madriu-Perafita-Claror cultural landscape. It lies near Estany de la Nou and below the high watershed toward the Port de Perafita, on routes that connect Escaldes-Engordany with the upper valleys and the GRP. The refuge is a basic shelter for walkers, not a staffed lodge or reserved bed service. Reaching it requires a mountain hike, and onward paths cross remote terrain.

Government’s current refuge register lists six beds, while FAM lists ten; the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley authority also describes a capacity of around ten in its refuge information. The Government lists the shelter as open all year, with a stove, table, benches, a porch for firewood and water nearby. The valley authority calls it an unguarded refuge with a fireplace, table, benches and wood porch. Plan for six places because of the official discrepancy and because no space can be reserved. Nearby water may be seasonal and is not guaranteed potable; carry treatment and enough backup supply. Do not assume that dry firewood is stocked. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, warm layers and light.

One approach begins from Escaldes-Engordany and follows the GR 7 through the Madriu valley before branching into the Perafita valley. The official route description for the Estany de la Nou itinerary connects the high area with Refugi de Perafita, while the GR11.10 route enters Andorra via Port de Perafita, passes the Perafita lakes and refuge, and descends by the Graus de Perafita toward Entremesaigües. Government route information describes the Perafita hut as part of this cross-border route system. The trail is not a road-access destination: choose your starting point and route direction carefully, and check the profile for steep climbs and descents. A track that reaches the refuge from a different valley is not necessarily a simple return route.

The refuge can form part of a larger traverse toward Claror, Fontverd, Riu dels Orris or l’Illa. The GRP links Claror and Perafita with high ground around Estany de la Nou and Collada de la Maiana; a Visit Andorra itinerary describes a full stage from Refugi de Claror to Refugi de l’Illa that passes Perafita. Those connections make the hut useful for multi-day trips but bring changing elevation, weather and navigation demands. Hikers should allow time for the full route and should not rely on a generic distance between map markers. Confirm that any planned border crossing and transport in Spain are covered by the itinerary.

The valley combines mountain scenery with traces of centuries of pastoral use. Forest paths, alpine meadows, stone-built bordes and shepherd structures show how people used the valley for seasonal grazing and movement between settlements and high pastures. Estany de la Nou and the streams of the Perafita basin provide prominent natural landmarks, while the surrounding ridges form a high watershed. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror property is recognized by UNESCO as a cultural landscape, not merely a collection of scenic viewpoints. Keep to marked trails, do not disturb historic stonework and leave gates and livestock areas as found.

The names can be confusing: Refugi de Perafita is the building, Port de Perafita is a high pass, and Estany de la Nou is a lake along connected routes. Coordinates in the Government register are 42°28′47″N, 1°34′44″E. The 2026 refuge map lists the hut at 2,200 metres, while some route documents show nearby elevation figures that vary by point and cartographic convention. Use the hut pin and the trail map together, rather than navigating to the pass or lake when you intend to reach the shelter.

There are no daily opening hours. The Government’s year-round status describes an unguarded shelter and should not be read as a winter trail-access guarantee. Snow, ice and poor visibility can make the high passes hazardous, and spring melt or heavy rain can affect streams. Visit Andorra’s general safety recommendation for routes above 1,700 metres is late June through late September, with a possible extension from May to October only when weather and terrain conditions permit. Check forecasts and local information, carry offline navigation and tell someone your route. Camping in the valley is subject to communal authorization rules; check the valley authority’s guidance rather than assuming a tent is freely permitted.

Refugi de Perafita is a strong waypoint for experienced walkers exploring the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valleys or crossing the GR network, especially those linking Estany de la Nou with Claror or l’Illa. The setting rewards a slower itinerary, but the unstaffed hut has limited capacity and no guaranteed supplies. Plan to be self-sufficient, protect the cultural landscape and keep an alternative overnight plan in case the shelter is full. In poor visibility, the basin’s branching paths can be difficult to distinguish, so mark the hut and intended return junctions in your offline map before leaving the trailhead. Allow enough daylight to retrace your route if a pass proves unsafe.
